Video Media, which can reproduce the scene of communication, are of great help in learner’s understanding of a language. With an increasing emphasis on communication skills, people show greater interests in video media, which can reflect communication environment in various languages. In addition, video media, with both visual and audio means, contribute to learners listening comprehension. In this study, audio-visual materials are selected as listening education materials and Korean learners at intermediate level are chosen as subjects. The aim is to develop a practical textbook that fits the ability of intermediate Korean learners and can improve their listening and communication skills.
Listening materials play a role of great importance in Korean listening education. Nowadays, however, the listening materials used in classes are mainly in audio form, which often weaken learners’ interests and are out of step with actual communication environment. Fortunately, audio-visual materials can meet the gap. The study begins with a survey of the properties of the audio-visual materials used in listening education and its effects.
Second, the took the investigation way of questionnaire on listening education with the use of audio-visual materials, followed by talks with teachers. It then made analysis of the results. The first questionnaire is for Korean teachers in Korean education system, showing the status quo of using audio-visual materials, teachers attitudes towards them and the subjects and listening activities drawing teachers interests. The second one is for Korean learners at intermediate level. This survey reveals learners’ interests in various styles of audio-visual materials and their likeable listening subjects and activities, which set a foundation for the designing of teaching content and learning activities. It also made analysis of several audio-visual textbooks and their weak points. The analysis of the textbooks and their pros and cons is meaningful for developing a new textbook.
The study ends with a plan for developing an Intermediate Korean listening textbook with audio-visual materials. The textbook should attach great importance to the practical use of audio-visual materials and help improve learner’s listening ability and the ability of communication skills. It also takes films and advertisements as the cases of the book.
Due to the diversities of audio-visual materials, difficulties always emerged in collecting and using materials. Therefore, the study doesn’t provide a more specific and complete syllabus and the actual effects of using audio-visual books remain to be proven by practice. It is hoped that more and more audio-visual materials, which are of educational value and can boost learners’ interests, will emerge. Moreover, Korean education needs more and further study of application methods of nonlinguistic elements in audio-visual materials.
