Language contains the culture of the country. If it is impossible to understand the culture of the country well, therefore, it may cause a problem on communication. As communication-oriented language approach (teaching) which it is important to use language is appeared escaping from a grammar-oriented language approach which simply memorizes grammar, the importance of a culture education becomes gradually recognized, too. Even a Korean language textbook explains Korean culture through setup of a lesson in relation to culture and a specific commentary by reflecting the importance of a culture education. The most important thing in culture education is to teach what and how. The target of culture education depends on the level and purpose of a learner. So, it needs to select an item about culture education in accordance with the learning stage of a learner. Accordingly, this study aims at examining culture education of the Korean language textbooks for beginners among the current Korean textbooks which have been used in an actual lesson. That is, the purpose of this study is to select the culture items that it should learn in a beginner's course, analyze them in the viewpoint of contents after classifying them into the culture in a language life, a foods, clothing and shelter life, a public life and natural materials, etc. and analyze the correlation between culture items and textbooks in the viewpoint of construction for a Korean language textbook by making use of difficulty and visual materials.
If the main issues discussed in this study are summarized for each chapter, they are as followings.
In Chapter I, the necessity of this study, how to study and the scope are mentioned.
Chapter II examined the definition of culture, the importance of culture education in Korean language education, the goal of culture education and the details. The scope of culture is wide and abstract, and the definition depends on the purpose of culture education and the viewpoint is very varied. In addition, it was known that each scholar has diversely suggested the necessity of culture education in Korean language education. Also, it was recognized that the goal of culture education is necessary for being segmented by the step to learn Korean language of each learner, motivation to learn it and the personality.
Chapter III divided an analysis criterion into a content-based criteria and a structural criterion in order to analyze a Korean language textbook. And then it analyzed the method that a Korean language textbook has suggested each item of culture education based on these criteria. These criteria were greatly devided into the culture in a language life, a public life, a food, clothing and shelter life and a natural material once more.
The culture in a language life showed that the cultural items which should be suggested in the beginner's course are greeting (self-introduction), parallelism & terms of address and Korean-styled expressions.
The culture in a food, clothing & shelter life was sorted as a clothing life explaining what related with a fashion style and traditional Korean clothes (Hanbok), a foods life such as a kind of foods, taste, ordering foods at a restaurant and table etiquette & the culture in relation to a foods life and a shelter life (housing) of the structure of Korean families and housing options.
In a public life, it discovered that what related with use of public facilities, hobbies and leisure are the cultural items which should learn in the beginner's course.
The cultural items for natural materials were famous places, the features of the Korean Peninsular, weather and what related with seasons.
This study examined the degree of difficulty and the interconnection between use of visual materials and a task in the viewpoint of construction of a Korean language textbook. Thus, the items which are not suitable for being suggested in the beginner's course among cultural items in each textbook were analyzed and examined the vocabularies and contents. To understand the use of visual materials, the items which have been suggested in all textbooks were selected and then investigated that they have been properly used for each textbook. In the beginner's course, also, a task is given to understand that a learner satisfactorily understood and learned culture after explaining it. So, this study examined tasks given in all Korean language texts in relation to culture. Then, it pointed out the problems in each textbook and discussed the solution based on the analysis result.
The range of culture is very broad. And everything learning from a textbook can become the Korean culture. Therefore, a textbook should explain the Korean culture so that a learner who wants to learn Korean language is able to understand uprightly it. So, the objective criteria to select the cultural items or cultural factors and how to suggest effectively cultural items in an intermediate course or an advanced course should be arranged for culture education that it is able to foster communication skills in the Korean language education from now on.
