This research aims to present effective teaching lessons for cultural education in the Korean Language for foreigners who seek to study Korean as a second language.
Language is a major part of every culture. We not only need the linguistic skills; vocabulary, grammar, etc, but also require a whole understanding of the culture in a society in order to become fully proficient in a particular language. Understanding the culture of a relevant language significantly enhances ones ability to study a Foreign Language and communicate with native speaking people.
Many Korean textbooks concentrate on linguistic skills such as grammar and vocabularies, and ignore the cultural elements, therefore many students who are studying Korean as a second language have difficulty in successfully understanding and adopting the Korean language.
The outline of this thesis is as follows: Firstly, the thesis reviews the requirement of cultural education, and analysis the current situation of Korean textbooks that include cultural elements in the teaching of the Korean language
Upon reviewing the Korean textbooks, it makes recommendations on cultural elements that can be included to the relevant unit in each text, in order to significantly enhance the learning experience for the student. The order of the analysis is based on the following texts Seoul National University Language School(2005), Yeonsei University(2006), and Yeonsei University(2007).
The research provides efficient teaching lessons for cultural education in the Korean language foreigners. It introduces types of teaching methods: the Whole Language Approach, the Total Physical Response, and the Task-based Approach. In addition, it applies these teaching methods to units of Korean textbook and presents efficient teaching lessons with cultural elements.
In conclusion, learners can significantly enhance their Korean language learning experience through the inclusion of the cultural elements into Korean language education.
