The symbolic words in Korean are native words that highlight the characteristics of the Korean language. When communicating through using symbolic words, it is able to express the speaker's thoughts or feelings in an enriched way. But since these symbolic words are different from the mother tongue system of foreign students, it is very difficult for foreign students to learn the symbolic words. Therefore detailed research is needed so foreign students learning the Korean language will be able to recognize the symbolic words and use them. Therefore in this study, in order for Korean learners to recognize the symbolic words in a clear way and for them to use them properly, the study was conducted centered on the symbolic words of "-hɑdɑ, -gəridɑ, -dɛdɑ, and -idɑ."
The results of this study are summarized as the following.
In Chapter 1, the characteristics of symbolic words and the educational needs are clearly stated. Centered on the reasons why foreign students learning the Korean language have a difficult time, this chapter proposes the education categories of symbolic words that needs to be educated in the Korean language education. In Chapter 2, concepts and categories of the symbolic words are summarized and the characteristics of the symbolic words were examined in phonological, morphological, syntactic, and semantic ways. In Chapter 3, in order to extract a list of meaningful symbolic words, selected original Korean Language text book, TOPIK, symbolic words list of Korean Language Educational, symbolic words list for Korean Language Educational purposes, and symbolic words frequency list of several documents as basic data. By using the Meta-Metering Methods of Kim, Gwanghae (2003), extracted a 347 words of symbolic words list. In Chapter 4, centered on the extracted list in Chapter 3, morphological and semantic characteristics of the words "-hɑdɑ, -gəridɑ, -dɛdɑ, -idɑ." were examined and created in a table. The morphological and semantic characteristics of the words "-hɑdɑ, -gəridɑ, -dɛdɑ, -idɑ." are as follows.
This study has examined the characteristics of the symbolic words, built a list of symbolic words, and proposed combining information, morphological, and semantic attributes and is significant because it will allow Korean language learners to use symbolic words in a variety of ways. Based on this, with Korean language teachers searching more efficient ways to learn symbolic words, hope there are more active researches are done in symbolic word studies.
