Literature, one of human language behaviors, is a mental activity that aims for human openness and diversity, and pursues reflective thinking. Thus, literature not only represents language uses in various contexts but also shows the sociocultural background of a language in a total way. In the field of the Korean language teaching, however, the opportunities to be exposed to Korean literature have been given only to the learners of advanced level in proficiency. Also, the approaches to teaching Korean have greatly been language-focused to those who are interested in Korean culture and/or to those who live in Korea for some reasons.
Literature education covers language, culture, and personal growth. When this language education is utilized not only in advanced course but also beginning and intermediate courses, teaching Korean can be more enriched. Therefore, in this thesis, I suggested a method of teaching Korean literature using traditional oral literature, which is free from problems in transforming language and style of original. Among those, I selected legends, which is a subcategory of tales. Lots of studies on teaching traditional literature are considered to have some problems in that they just stay in the level of arousing learners' interest, they select the stories that is not well known even to Korean people, and they are not satisfactory in suggesting practical methods in Korean language classroom.
In this study, in order to overcome the problems above and suggest a concrete and practical method of teaching Korean literature for learning Korean as a foreign language, I selected the legend "Baby General", based on the Carter and Long's 3 teaching models: Culture model, Language model, and Personal Growth model, which are widely used in teaching Korean.
In chapter 1, I explained the purpose and the necessity of the study and presented the related literature review. In chapter 2, I examined the current situation and significance of teaching legends in teaching Korean. In chapter 3, I analyzed the legend "Baby General" and its factor for literature education in terms of language, culture, and personal growth. In chapter 4, based on the study above, I set three different levels for teaching the legend "Baby General": beginner's level, intermediate level, and advanced level. And then I suggested lesson plans for teaching Korean for each levels, considering four language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
