'Korean Romanization's Transcription has lots of discussions about its writing theory. One of them is 'writing as its pronunciation' and the other is 'writing as Korean language's character'. Finally, writing as its pronunciation became our rule and we used it from 1984. But this rule is making some difficult problems more than the other theories. Because of its rule, Korean people has confusion how to transcript our characters, and foreigners think that Korean language is so difficult to study or use.
'Writing as its pronunciation' is supported by ISO(International Organization for Standardization) strongly. And Japanese language also use same rule so that our Romanization's rule is widely accepted. However, Korean language is basically constructed by a phoneme earlier than a syllable. A phoneme is so changable to pronounce by its environment. If we change the character as its pronunciation, one phoneme can be different Romanization writing and it destroys Chinese word's meanings in Korean language's word.
Of course 'writing as a character' cannot be a perfect solution about Romanization's problems. 'writing as a character' will be difficult to study at first time, and foreigners hesitate between pronunciation and writing. But if we present a determinate rule of Romanization's writing rule and inform it, the problem will be solved easily. And if a final consonant is ruled by pronunciation, it can avoid a little complex.
This thesis has a purpose to investigate Korean Romanization from our history and the other investigator's study.
