The purpose of this study is to examine the actual condition of service for the native english teachers through depth interview and to achieve the result suitable for the object of inducement for the native English teacher system, thinking of improving method if any problem or complain.
The researchable issues for this are as below.
How is the actual condition of service for the native English teachers who work for elementary school in Busan?
To solve this problem, the author carried out literature research and depth interview side by side. Through literature research, the definition of terms that the native English teachers, concept for the actual condition of their service, the necessity and quality of the class making use of native English teachers, the present condition of EPIK business, the present arranging condition of the native English teachers in Busan and treated contents. Also, the efficiency of team teaching with native English teachers, native English teachers' influence on the students' definitive factor and main prior research for the actual condition and job satisfaction of their service.
For the inspecting research to solve the research issues, interview was performed for 11 native English teachers in the elementary schools and their living environment was divided into school environment and dwelling environment. Also, the author examined their motive for support and future plan, teaching environment and support, living condition, tutors, the relationship with students and parents, analyzed the contents and asked detailed questions prepared beforehand in order to confirm more profound and substantial 19 questions. The author interviewed native English teachers for the environment of English class, the number of students in a class, the number of lessons a week, school feeding, the efficiency of team teaching, the efficiency of lesson by individual teacher, satisfaction of orientation and study & training and the name of desired study & training in order to examine teaching environment and actual condition of support after examining the motive why they came to apply native English teachers in Korea if they made contracts again or not or substantial future plan after their contracts were expired. Also, to understand their dwelling condition, the author examined their dwelling environment, their commuting distance, insurance, the relationship between the owner of a house and his or her neighborhood. Last, the author let them answer for the relationship among the teachers, students and parents without affection and substantially.
Researchable problem analyzed result with the contents of answer responding to the first interview.
First, native English teachers applied for English teachers with vocation awareness and passion for education they want to teach the students. Also, except for the native English teachers who have their private situation, as the other native English teachers answered to have recontracts, they are judged to feel strong satisfaction for Korean society and the teaching profession, and to be adapted in Korea.
Second, from result of research for class environment and support, they were very satisfied with their teaching class environment and support but they worried that the installed equipments were not utilized effectively so well due to the limited education time by each grade. Especially, they said that they couldn't teaching the students by their grade and control them because the number of students are too many. Also, they appointed that the most significant factors decreasing the efficiency of English education was crammed class consisting of over 30 students. All the native teachers responding to the interview thought that team teaching was a good teaching method for effective English education but some of them appointed that the students relied on Korean teachers as they taught the students with the same methods as Korean teachers. Moreover, they answered that Korean teachers should give the time to let them think matters into English rather than explain them the matters into Korean to let them communicate with the others into English in order to progress team teaching successfully. They answered that any practice course which they can teach the contents learnt from orientation directly. Also, they hope to learn teaching method and Korean continuously from the study & training during the semesters.
Most of them hope that remote study & training and selective lecture which they can select could be established without any limitation for time or place. Some of them want the study & training and forum that they can share with Korean teachers. Especially, if Korean teachers are in agony and make effort for more efficient English education after admitting the native teachers' opinions.
Third, as some of the native English teachers who answered for the interview live around amusement quarters or at remote area, they feel unsatisfied a lot for their living environment because of the research result for living condition. If they are considered to live each other in the near distance each other, they can devote themselves in the education much more in the stable dwelling environment and qualified native teachers can be procured.
Fourth, they answered that they are satisfied with the students. However, except for homeroom teachers, little teachers communicate with the parents.
The author suggested the below advices with a base of these conclusion.
Some of them agreed that team teaching is more effective than private teaching. However, as the students rely on Korean teachers too much, the efficiency of team teaching decreases. To enhance the efficiency of team teaching and satisfy themselves with good class, substantial and various discussion and research should be performed for the method of team teaching.
Second, as they said that they feel difficulty in teaching the students due to crammed class and different class, native teachers' opinions should be accepted, and systemic and substantial methods should be procured in order to foster better English class.
Third, as this study was performed by the qualitative method for the limited native teachers who work for elementary school in Busan, comprehensive and various studies for the actual condition of service for native teachers should be performed through follow-up research by quantitative method among questionnaire methods.
