The purpose of this study is to see the impact of pre-listening activities using predicting strategy in Korean language education on learners' listening abilities, interests and self-confidence. To achieve the aforementioned goal of this study, the main points and the structure of this study are as follows. In chapter 2, listening comprehension processing and listening strategies are looked into. Also, predicting strategy, which is one type of listening strategies, and pre-listening activities that was proved in previous studies were analyzed. Presenting the pictures which is non-linguistic cues and presenting the vocabulary which is linguistic cues, both of which are forms of pre-listening activities using predicting strategy, were closely studied. Furthermore, Korean language teachers were surveyed in order to understand their perception on listening education and its reality. In chapter 3, experiments for this study were explained and contents of which were written according to experimental process. The experiments were conducted on the 36 intermediate learners studying at universities in the Daegu/Gyungbook region for the purpose of studying abroad. All the subjects were divided into 3 groups, control group did not do pre-listening activities and the other 2 experiment groups did pre-listening activities seven times using predicting strategy that provided subjects with pictures and vocabulary. Prior to experiments, identity of the 3 groups were verified with listening test. Their interests and self-confidence in Korean listening was examined with the help of surveys. After completing experiments, listening tests were implemented to check whether listening abilities improved and the results of surveys were analyzed so as to see if there was a change in the degree of interest and self-confidence in Korean listening. The results of the study and discussion of the results were mainly dealt with in chapter 4. This chapter analyzed the effect of pre-listening activities using predicting strategy on interest and self-confidence of subjects in listening and its ability. Lastly, in chapter 5, all the contents discussed on this thesis were summarized. Furthermore, the implications of this study for Korean listening education and the limits of this study were shown. The results of this study are as follows. First, pre-listening activities using predicting strategy was proven to improve learners' Korean listening abilities. In regard to pre-listening activities, two groups were each presented with linguistic cues, vocabulary and non-linguistic cues, pictures. Two groups showed improvements in listening abilities. This is improving learners', who aim at achieving smooth communication skills, listening abilities. Four skills of languages-listening, speaking, reading, and writing-can be organically acquired not by excluding skills of other languages, but by doing pre-listening activities. Second, experiment group who went through pre-listening activities using predicting strategy has shown a significant change in interest and self-confidence in listening. The group which was presented with pictures and implemented pre-listening activities using predicting strategy showed a significant rise in the degree of interest and the group presented with vocabulary in the degree of self-confidence. However, the two groups which did pre-listening activities showed that self-confidence and interest in Korean listening roughly improved. In conclusion, this study shows that pre-listening activities using predicting strategy has a significant meaning in effective listening learning of Korean learners.
