The purpose of this is to study the translation aspect of the modal expressions in Literature Translation from Korean (source) text to English (target) text. This explains the modal system in Korean and English which has bees studied to this point. I analyzed how the modal expression in Korean is translated into the modal expression in English from morphological and semantic aspects with the same degree of meaning existing based on its linguistic modal expression.
Generally speaking the modality is divided into two types, the deontic modality and epistemic modality. I discovered that the deontic modality meaning in Korean representing 'obligation' is limited to '-ya ha-/-ya doi-/-aya/-yaman'. Since the modal expression is close to functional meaning rather than pragmatic and communicative phenomenon, it is important to understand the meaning of the modal expression in order to translate properly. It is difficult to determine various implications and meanings from spoken language. Particularly, modal expression has a limitation on the point of expressive factor revealing strongly speaker's subjectivity. By analyzing the translation aspect of the modal expression from a semantic aspect, I examined distortions about degree of meaning in the sentence as a whole, when not translated properly in modal expression.
