Most immigrated women who got married to men in fishing and agrarian areas in Korea in 1990s generally chose international marriage to solve the economic problems of their own.
On the contrary, the characteristic of immigrated women in Naju district who chose international marriage in 1990s was that they were supported by specific religious group called Tongilgyo and formed multicultural families by religious selection. Regarding general characteristic of these women, their nationalities were Japan and the Philippines and their religion was Tongilgyo.
They were mainly in their thirties and their general educational level was graduation from university.
Another character was that they had a chance to learn Korean culture and language in support of Tongilgyo before and after marriage.
They lived in Korea in continuous support of Tongilgyo after marriage, had close relation with women who chose international marriage through Tongilgyo, and actively participated in community activities through this relationship.
Therefore, this study intended to grasp in detail which similarities and differences existed in school Life Adaptation of the Children in multicultural families in Naju district comparing to general problems of multicultural families revealed as a result of preliminary study, on the basis of distinct formative background different from other districts.
For this purpose, I have set following research questions.
First, what is the characteristic of formative background of multicultural families in Naju district?
Second, what is the difference of school Life Adaptation between children from multicultural families in Naju district who have been affected from their mothers and those in general multicultural families.
This study was implemented for 10 teachers working for J elementary school in Naju district, who taught children in multicultural families. To grasp general problems of school Life Adaptation of the children, I selected the items regarded as general problems of school Life Adaptation of the children in multicultural families out of five lower variables of measure including relationship with homeroom teacher, friendship, learning activities, compliance, school events developed by Lee Sangpil(1990) in order to find out children's adaptation level of general school life, through preliminary study and contained generals in items of the questionaries.
The results of this study can be summarized as follows.
First, active response to the problems appeared in learning environment of Korean language
Originally, there must be difficulties in learning Korean language. However, in the case of multicultural families in Naju district, understanding of Korean language of children in multicultural families was rather high because their mothers with higher education level and enthusiasm guided them. Especially, understanding level of children whose mothers were Japanese was high. It seems that educational background of mothers in Naju district and enhanced double cultural characteristic of children due to constant participation in social activities in support of the religious group have a positive effect on children's adaptation to school life.
Second, the problem of identification confusion due to wrong recognition of society
The problem of identification confusion of children in general multicultural families is the result of physical characteristics and double culture in families, but that of children in multicultural families in Naju district was different. First of all, most children have physical characteristics that are hardly distinguishable with outward appearance. The experience of confusion in school started from the recognition and attitude of teachers and the school authorities. When school distinguishes them from other students and guide or support using different methods, they said they felt themselves different from others.
Third, friendship problems due to negative attitude toward multicultural characteristics
Friendship problems of children in general multicultural families are often caused by physical characteristics and poor language. However, in the case of multicultural families in Naju district, main problem was often negative recognition and attitude toward multicultural families rather than physical characteristics and poor language. That is to say, children didn't want to reveal they were from multicultural families but had difficulties since it was revealed due to unconscious discriminating attitude of school managers or teachers. However, these problems were overcome as they enter their senior years and multicultural characteristics are enhanced, and especially language problem didn't cause many problems in their senior classes.
Fourth, the characteristic appeared in school class due to learning guidance by well-educated mothers
The characteristics appeared in school class due to active learning guidance and enthusiastic interest in school life of children by well-educated mothers were that they appeared stable in understanding of Korean language and basic calculation.
