Language is a mirror of the culture of a country. The Korean language is a mirror of Korean society and culture as well, and one of good examples is honorific expressions. Foreigners who learn Korean must acquire the use of the right honorific expressions.
The purpose of this study was to seek ways of providing foreigners learning Korean with effective education about the use of honorific expressions. The honorific rules of the Korean language were analyzed, and then Korean textbooks that were currently in use were analyzed to find out how the honorific rules were educated. As a result, it's found that the honorific rules were just instructed by listing related fragmentary vocabularies and by sentence practice, and no textbooks included the kinds of activities that were designed to teach and acquire the honorific rules in a systematic manner.
To remedy the situations, in which way learners could be educated to acquire the honorific rules effectively was explored, and teaching plans that catered to beginners were proposed by employing dialog situations. The honorific expressions could be defined as part of sociolinguistic norms, and it could produce good effects when the expressions are taught in real contexts. Learners are able to acquire the honorific expressions by being exposed to a variety of situations and practicing how to use the expressions in an appropriate manner. For intermediate and advanced learners, teaching plans that utilized role- playing were proposed. For advanced learners, script writing and role- playing were both introduced to increase the efficiency of education.
In the future, more foreigners are expected to learn Korean, and intensive research efforts should be channeled into education of the honorific expressions that many foreign learners have difficulties in acquiring.
