This study aims to propose feasibility of usage of news and methods for advanced level students in the Korean language education. The widely used news education in variety of language education is considered to be an excellent medium reflecting the society and culture of target language. News is a medium consisting of characters and correct grammar and abundant vocabulary are being used so it is of help for the learners to improve vocabulary and learn correct sentence. Further, as it contains texts providing information related to reality while reflecting the interests of community members, it not only gives the learner interest through up-to-date information, but also helps to gain various informations and understand social conventions or life style. Another positive aspect of news is that the data is easily obtainable and highly usable so the students are able to use them in self-directed learning.
NIE is an educational activity that utilize newss as teaching materials in class. This educational system has not been utilized in Korea for long but this method is being utilized in various educational fields and it has been receiving positive ratings. This methods has been also recognized for demonstrating its effects of educational theory by the implementation of leading nations. In accordance, the news advantage education to be applied to the Korean language education and educational effects are expected.
First in the second chapter, news was examined as the medium itself. The definition and characteristics of the news and the components of the news were checked. Even through the main purpose of the news is not educational, the possibility of news being used for educational purposes were examined. Then, the advantage of news education was examined. After researching on the news education all over the world, the news education in Korean language education was defined as "Teaching Methods Expecting Educational Effects with Leveraging News as Instructional Media." Then the learning objects were set as provoking interest in learning, gaining knowledge through reading a variety of stories, and being able to write through not only reading the text but understanding it and utilizing the information by analyzing the text and selecting necessary information to use in writing. Further, the effects of news education in Korean language studies were argued by dividing the effects into three categories of utilization of news education on the linguistic effects, cultural effects, and contextual effects.
Next, before discussing the specific training plan in the third chapter, news education in the educational settings were examined through analysis of the text. According to the analysis on five kinds of actual advanced stage Korean language textbooks, there were not too many news articles mentioned in the analyzed textbooks and the news articles that were in the textbook had a severe degree of adaptation so the text characteristics of news articles had disappeared.
Therefore in order to present actual data for advanced learners, it is necessary to use news texts as a supplementary material and this was presented in the fourth chapter. In total, 7 types of news article selection criteria were indicated and the methods of newss being used as a supplementary material to the actual textbooks were recognized. Furthermore, the news was divided into 4 categories according to the component specific categories of articles, advertisements, cartoons, and others, in order to present a lesson plan utilizing the news text.

본 연구는 고급 단계의 한국어 학습자를 대상으로 하는 한국어 교육에 있어서 신문 활용의 타당성과 그 방법을 제시하는 것을 주목적으로 하고 있다.
현재 여러 교육 분야에서 널리 이용되는 신문은 목표 언어의 사회와 문화를 반영하는 훌륭한 교수 매체라 할 수 있다. 신문은 문자로 이루어진 매체로 정확한 문법과 풍부한 어휘가 사용되어 학습자들의 어휘력 향상과 올바른 문장 습득에 도움이 된다. 또한 사회 구성원들의 관심사를 반영하여 실제와 관련 있는 정보를 제공하는 텍스트를 포함하고 있어, 실제적인 최신 정보를 통해 학습자들의 흥미를 쉽게 유발시킬 수 있는 한편 다양한 정보 습득과 사회의 관습이나 생활방식에 대한 이해에 도움을 줄 수 있다. 그리고 자료를 구하기 쉽고 활용도가 높아 학생들의 자기 주도적 학습이 용이하다는 장점도 가지고 있다.
신문활용교육(NIE)은 이러한 신문을 교재로서 수업에 이용하는 교육 활동으로 한국에 도입된 역사는 길지 않으나 교육의 여러 분야에서 활용되고 긍정적 평가를 받고 있으며 선행 실시 국가들에 의해 그 교육적 효과가 이론 및 실험 등에 의해서 입증되었다. 따라서 이러한 신문활용교육을 한국어 교육에도 적용하여 교육적 효과를 기대하고자 하였다.
이에 먼저 2장에서는 매체 그 자체로서의 신문에 대해 알아보았다. 신문의 정의와 그 특성, 구성요소를 알아보고 신문의 원목적은 교육용이 아니지만 교육용으로 사용할 수 있는지에 대해 알아보았다. 다음으로 신문활용교육에 대해 알아보았는데 세계 각국의 신문활용교육에 대해 알아본 뒤, 한국어 교육에서의 신문활용교육을 ‘학습에 신문을 교수매체로 활용하여 교육적 효과를 기대하는 교수법’이라 정의를 내렸다. 그리고 그 학습 목표를 학습에 대한 흥미를 불러일으키며, 다양한 이야기를 읽고 이해하여 지식을 얻고, 읽기에서 나아가 내용에 대한 자신의 의견을 피력하고 그것에 대한 글쓰기를 할 수 있으며, 정보와 자료를 보고 분석하여 필요한 것을 뽑아내어 활용할 수 있다는 것으로 잡았다. 또한 신문을 활용한 교육의 언어적 효과, 문화적 효과, 내용적 효과의 세 부분으로 나누어 외국어로서의 한국어 교육에 신문이 활용되었을 때의 효과에 대해서 논했다.
다음으로 구체적인 교육 방안에 대한 논의에 앞서 3장에서는 교재 분석을 통해 한국어 교육 현장에서의 신문 활용 상황에 대해 알아보았다. 실제 다섯 종류의 고급 단계 한국어 교재를 분석한 결과, 고급 단계의 교과서에서는 신문 텍스트가 많이 수록되어 있지 않았으며 그나마 수록된 신문 자료도 개작의 정도가 심하여 신문 텍스트의 특징이 많이 사라져 있었다.
따라서 고급 학습자를 위한 실제적인 자료 제시를 위해 신문 텍스트를 부교재로 활용해야 한다고 생각하고 제 4장에서는 이에 대한 내용을 제시하였다. 전체 7가지로 신문 자료 선정의 기준을 제시하고, 실제 교재의 부교재로서 신문이 어떻게 활용되어 수업에 사용되는지 알아보았다. 그리고 신문을 그 구성 요소별로 기사, 광고, 만화, 기타 부분의 네 항목으로 분류해 실제 신문 텍스트를 사용한 수업 방안을 제시하였다.
