The purpose of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of Korean pronunciation training approached by articulation instruction. For this purpose, Korean pronunciation training program approached by articulation instruction was developed.
Subject for the study is a foreigner who is studying Korean through foreign language, so six Chinese students are selected. They are under 35 years old and have been living in Korea over 5 years and their Korean language skill is above mid level of TOPIK (Test of proficiency in Korean). Six Chinese women are divided into two groups randomly. Experimental group had Korean pronunciation training approached by articulation instruction, and controlled group maintained their existing Korean training. Experimental group had a 40 minutes of training during 10 weeks from March 3rd, 2~3 times a week, 18 sessions in total.
Pronunciation improvement status is measured by 4 language test ; before training, after 10 sessions of training, right after 18 sessions completed, 10 days after training completion. Test before training and 10 days after training were conducted to both group and checked the difference between two groups.
To see the improvement of overall language pronunciation, articulation accuracy in word level, articulation accuracy in sentence level, rate of speech intelligibility, and correct response rate of in phonological rules are considered as evaluation standards.
As a result of study, all of 3 subjects in experimental group who had Korean pronunciation training approached by articulation instruction showed improvement in articulation accuracy, rate of speech intelligibility , and rate of correct response in phonological rules. T-test result showed that there was a meaningful difference according to each level of group in articulation difference in word level and sentence level, and rate of correct response in phonological rules excluding speech intelligibility. Thus, effectiveness of Korean pronunciation training approached by articulation instruction is confirmed.
