This study is to investigate the effect of shadow reading on learners' listening comprehension and their Korean learning attitudes by carrying out shadow reading activities in the listening class as a plan to improve their listening comprehension for a short time since it is known to be most necessary to take college lectures out of the Korean classes for academic purposes. The experiment period was eight weeks in total. For the experimental group, after-listening activities were carried out to perform shadow reading requiring learners' attention and positiveness, and on the basis of the results of listening tests and the questionnaire survey before and after the experiment, the conclusion was made on the research problem as follows:
Firstly, as a result of comparing the learners' listening comprehension through before a pre-test and a post-test, it was found that both the experimental group and the control group improved their listening comprehension regardless of the activities. In addition, both the experimental group and the control group showed positive improvement of listening comprehension, but the experimental group showed a higher improvement rate that the control group, and especially the top group seemed to be affected most by the activities.
Secondly, there was improvement in the listening comprehension of both the experimental group and the control group, but the group showing the most improvement of listening comprehension was the experimental group of the top group, which indicates that shadow reading activities are more effective to the top group than ordinary activities.
Thirdly, as result of examining the effect of after-listening activities on their Korean learning attitudes before and after the experiment, the experimental group generally showed a significant difference.
Fourthly, as a result of examining the effect of after-listening activities on their Korean learning attitudes according to the high, middle and low groups of both the experimental group and the control group, it was found that the low group in the experimental group showed more significant results than any other groups.
This study is to propose shadow reading as a listening methodology because of the special purpose that a great deal of listening information has to be handled for advanced learners with academic purposes, in that there has been no research on shadow reading in teaching Korean. Besides it tried to clarify the usefulness of shadow reading by verifying the effect of those related activities in the listening class.
