Dialect is closely related to society. Translators should not ignore the connotation of the dialect in works when writers use dialect with specific purposes to show the background of the characters or the conflict between classes or ethnics in their works. When considering the importance, the dialect in work should be translated carefully.
However, the translators have been rendering African American Vernacular English in novels or movies into Korean with unsystematic strategies and there are few previous researches on African American Vernacular English translation, which translators use as a guide.
This thesis aims to reiterate the importance of dialect and to explore the strategies of translating African American Vernacular English in novels and movies into Korean through case studies. In this regard, this thesis tries to find the answers to the following questions: first, what is the significance and the function of the dialect used in works? ;second, what are the strategies of translating African American Vernacular English into Korean and what characteristics do the strategies have?
This thesis is organised as follows: Chapter 1 consists of the necessity and the purpose of this study, the review of previous researches and the research methodology of this study. Chapter 2 looks over the definition of sociolinguistics, the relation of language and society and the relation between language and social class. Chapter 3 describes the definition of dialect and the effects of African American Vernacular English in works. Chapter 4 introduces translation strategies and case studies of African American Vernacular English into Korean. Chapter 5 summarizes the results of the study, admits the limitation of the study and presents the direction of future researches.
In conclusion, many foreign works have been introduced in standard Korean although they were written in African American Vernacular English. Translating African American Vernacular English into Korean is very difficult but effective and systematic way of African American Vernacular English's translation should be made. To this end, more studies will be needed. The author hopes that the research will contribute to triggering further researches on the translation of African American Vernacular English into Korean.
