Multiple Nominative Constructions(hereafter MNCs) are a construction that has more than two nominative marked NPs in a sentence. Generally speakiing, a predicate has the only one subject. In these constructions, however, NPs that seem to be subjects can occur numerous times theoretically.
The aim of this is to analyze MNCs in Korean by using the constraint-based grammar. For the analyses of the MNCs, this study specifically investigates the following items:
1. The properties of the nominative marked NPs.
2. The relationship between the nominative marked NPs and the predicate.
3. The relationship among the NPs.
4. The mechanism that constitutes MNCs.
The findings are follows:
1. The elements selected by the predicate are the argument, and the rest of those is an adjunct.
2. The relationship between the nominative marked NPs and the predicate is associated with 1.
3. The relationship among the NPs has two different meanings, which are possessive and class-member.
4. I suggested that Head-Modifier-Topic Rule and Verbal Noun Schema.
First of all, to examine the MNCs, I classified the Multiple Nominative Constructions(hereafter MNCs) with three types. The property of the first type is that the predicate of this type is an one-place predicate. So only one NP is an argument, the rest of those is an adjunct. The second type is all of the nominative marked NPs are the argument. The third type is that the argument of a predicate is a verbal noun, and a verbal noun has its own argument.
According to Im(2007), a topic is a grammatical category established at the sentence level. In Korean grammar, a topic is in the syntactic relation with the other elements in the sentence. Besides, all the semantic-pragmatic targets have a characteristic of a topic. In the MNCs, therefore, the unselected nominative marked NP is a topic.
As a result, I suggest Head-Modifier-Topic-Rule. It can work when the nominative marked NP is added to a sentence which has an one-place predicate and recursively added to a fully saturated sentence.
