Background & Objectives: There is an tendency that Broca's aphasia patients with agrammatism show syntax defects to understand sentences.
Specifically, the research results indicate that they have lower understanding level in the passive sentences than in active sentences. This is because when transformation from an active sentence to a passive sentence occurs, a trace is left in the original location moved to the other location but Broca's Aphasia patients with agrammatism can not recognize the trace. However, these studies mainly focus on English language speakers. This study aims at examining how Broca's aphasia with agrammatism whose mother tongue is Korean understand sentences.
Methods: The test subjects consist of fourteen normal adults whose mother tongue is Korean and fourteen aphasia patents that are diagnosed by K-WAB as Broca's aphasia. The difference of understanding active sentences and passive sentences were tested by sentence-picture mapping task. Test sentences are total fifty sentences that include three forms of passive sentences (morphological passivization, phrasal passivization, passivization of verbal nouns) that has linguistically different structure, active sentences corresponding to them, and passive and active sentences whose word orders are mixed. After the tester lets subject listen to target sentences, and they were asked to pick the pictures that match the target sentences.
Results: First, there is no significant difference between comprehension of active and passive sentences of Broca's aphasia patients whose mother tongue is Korean. Second, three forms of passive sentences that has linguistically different structure did not show significant difference. Third, sentence comprehension of a normal word order was higher than that of mixed word orders, which is statistically significant.
Discussion & Conclusion: Result of this study indicates that in terms of comprehending active and passive sentences of Broca's aphasia patients whose mother tongue is Korean, there is no difference between the former and the latter. This contradicts the existing research that argues Broca's aphasia patients with agrammatism have lower understanding level in the passive sentences than in active sentences. Also, the result that there is no significant difference among three passive sentences of linguistically different structure suggests that understanding Korean sentences cannot be explained by assuming the existence of a trace. And as fro the result that shows sentence comprehension of a normal word order was higher than that of mixed word orders, which is statistically significant, it is hard to come to the final conclusion only with this test data. In general, there are two methods to analyze passive sentences: the first is to assume a "trace" based on transformational grammar, and the second, not to assume a "trace" itself based on non-transformational grammar. If results discussed previously (there is no difference between understanding active and passive sentences, and there is no significant difference among three passive forms) are proven correct, it suggests that it is impossible to explain word order mixing through transformation that assumes a trace for Korean language.
