This study introduced the application of visual elements in Korean grammar education, and examined the effectiveness of the application of visual elements to students.
After a review of preceding studies in chapter 1, the range and types of visual elements were defined in chapter 2. Then, the study inquired why it is necessary to use visual elements in foreign language education or grammar education. Visual aids can help students understand the meanings of terms quickly by visualizing the meaning of expressions in foreign languages. Also, since it reproduces the language structure that students cannot actually see, it has been applied in foreign language education for long.
In chapter 3, the study looked into how the grammar part was structured in Korean textbooks. By categorizing visual elements by types, the examples of the applications of visual elements in Korean grammar education were described. Also, the study looked in the matters to be attended when structuring or applying visual elements.
In chapter 4, to know the effects of the application of visual elements to the students' grammar study, the study designed and carried out a model class. The 'irregular conjugations' that is one of the important part in Korean grammar study was selected as the objective item. Students were divided into treatment and control groups and then tested grammar ability after the model class. From the experiment, the study could derive a conclusion that the application of visual elements has positive effects on grammar study. Although it is difficult to expansively apply the results due to the limitations in experiments, it still provides useful implications from that the model class with visual elements was carried out and had positive responses from the students.
As the demand for Korean education has been increasing, and the structure has become various, the demands from the students are becoming various as well. Therefore, teaching methods as well should be studied from many view points. This study provides a methodology called an application of visual elements. If the visual elements suitable for each grammar item in grammar education are selected, and the class objectives are considered and applied appropriately, the grammar study which is perceived as difficult and boring can be changed to a positive way that gives interests to students. Also, this can simplify the complicated structure of foreign language so that students can understand and memorize the study contents for long term. Since the visual elements help students understand and comprehend the contents appropriately, they could be applied in grammar education efficiently as well.
