The Effects of Emotional Attention, Clarity, Repair, and Experiential Avoidance on Forgiveness

(Abstract)
This study was to examine the effects of emotional attention, clarity and repair, and experiential avoidance on the forgiveness and to investigate the difference of forgiveness between males and females. The subjects were 409 ordinary female and male residents(aged av. 35.25) in Daegu and Gyeongbuk area using Enright Forgiveness Inventory Korea(EFI), Trait Meta―Mood scale(TMMS) and Acceptance & Action Questionnaire-16 : AAQscale.
The results of this study are as follows.
First, Emotional clarity and repair showed positive relationship with forgiveness, and experiential avoidance showed negative effects on forgiveness, while the emotional attention showed no effects on forgiveness.
Second, emotional repair and experiential avoidance showed the most important effects on the total process of forgiveness. Emotional forgiveness was influenced by experiential avoidance and emotional repair, and behavioral forgiveness was influenced by emotional clarity and repair, while cognitional forgiveness was significantly influenced by emotional repair and experiential avoidance.
Third, there was no difference in the standard of forgiveness between males and females, but there was difference in the process of forgiveness,
Fourth, in the lower scale of forgiveness in case of males emotional clarity influenced the behavioral forgiveness, experiential avoidance and emotional repair influenced the cognitional forgiveness. In case of females, it was shown that emotional repair influenced the overall forgiveness and emotional clarity influenced the behavioral forgiveness.
The result of this study showed that emotional clarity and repair, and experiential avoidance acted importantly on the process of forgiveness, and intermediate factors between male and female acted differently in the process of reaching to the forgiveness.
