The increase of the marriage rate of the Korean people with foreigners since the late 1990s has brought up the rise of the number of their children. However, it can be easily expected that they will have a great difficulty in adapting themselves especially in Korea, a nation with homogeneous race and culture. Their higher rate of not attending school implies that more concerns and interventions are desperately needed. Therefore, this empirical research investigated their psychological adaptability and its factors from the view point of individual, family, society, and multiculture. Focusing on the psychological aspects that can be possible reasons for such various maladjustment as children's maladaptation in school, misconduct, and deviation. Based on the results, this study aims at suggesting a few ways of helping the multicultural family children adapt themselves more effectively to the Korean society; from the perspective of social welfare based on the more accurate understanding of their actual sufferings.
This study raised three research questions as follows.
First, what is the degree of internalizing problems of the multicultural family children? Second, what is the correlation between the factors of the children, family, society, multicultural background and internalizing problems of the multicultural family children? Third, how much do the factors of the children, family, society, multicultural background influence the internalizing problems of the multicultural family children?
The objects of this research were the children of the third to sixth grades attending one of the 25 elementary schools in Daejeon City, Chungcheungnamdo, and Chungcheungbukdo. The children have Korean fathers and foreign mothers from Southeast Asia, Middle Asia, Japan, or China. Out of 129 collected questionnaires, 115 were selected for this research excluding 10 unfaithful ones and 4 under the standard age.
The data analysis was done through SPSS 12.0 program, including frequency analysis, t-test, and correlation analysis. The results were as follows.
First, the degree of internalizing problems, such as contraction, depression, anxiety. These problems were just a little bit below the value of mean, which was not very serious. The degree of contraction was a little higher than those of the other two factors; depression and anxiety, and also higher than the mean of the whole internalizing problems. In other words, the internalizing problems in the multicultural family children participated in this research was comparatively not so serious. It was proved that they were undergoing contraction more than depression and anxiety.
Second, in the analysis of the difference in the internalizing problems according to the individual factors of the children. It was found that there was significant difference by the degree of academic achievement, despite no significant difference by genders or ages. That is to say, the higher the degree of academic achievement, the lower the degree of internalizing problems.
Third, in the analysis of the significant correlation between the internalizing problems, according to the family members factors of the children, it was revealed that there was significant correlation of couple conflict, economic degree, parents-children relationship. The lower the degree of couple conflict, the higher of domestic economy, the higher of parents-children relationship, and the lower degree of internalizing problems.
Fourth, in the analysis of the significant correlation between the internalizing problems and the social factors of the children. It turned out that there was significant correlation of peers' support and teachers'. That is, the higher was the degree of peers' support and teachers', the lower was the degree of internalizing problems.
ifth, in the analysis of the correlation between the internalizing problems and the multicultural factors of the children. It showed that there was significant correlation of children's stress from cultural adaptability and their mothers' communication ability in the Korean language. The less the stress of children, the higher the mothers' communication ability, and the lower the degree of internalizing problems.
Finally, in the analysis of the most powerful factors affecting the internalizing problems of the children in multicultural families went as follows. Among the multicultural factors, that of children's stress in cultural adjustment was the most significant prediction variable. And the couples conflict and parent-children relationship are among the family factors. The peers' support among social factors had statically significant impact upon the internalizing problems of the children in multicultural families.
After all, the results of this study showed that the lower the children's stress, the lower the perception of their parents' conflict, the more warm relationship and empathy they experienced, the lower their peers' support degree, the lower their internalizing problems.
This study was examined from various perspectives. The degree of psychological adaptability makes it possible to adjust themselves in both society, school life, and its factors. In this regard, this has contributed to expanding understanding of children with multicultural family background. This is of significance in that it has provided the basic materials to help the multicultural children be soundly adapted, and to prevent their maladjustment in the Korean Society.
