Honorific expressions in the Korean language are very important for understanding the Korean language, life style and culture. Through honorific expressions, Koreans express respect and manners as well as close relationships. It is rather easy for Chinese learners of the Korean language to understand the "honorific expressions" of the Korean language, since Chinese language has them as well. However, the honorific expressions in modern Chinese are not as highly developed, which causes difficulties for Chinese learners of the Korean language.
This five-chapter thesis, adopting the methodology of comparative linguistics, presents a comparative study of subject honorific addresses in Korean and Chinese languages.
Chapter One offers a brief introduction of the research subject, goal, and methodology, as well as a literary review of previous studies and findings in this field.
In Chapter Two, the author first defines honorific addresses in Chinese and Korean languages respectively, makes a comparison between the two, and proceeds to analyze the underlying reasons of honorific addresses from the aspects of language, history and culture. This chapter concludes with an introduction of the two basic functions of honorific addresses, designating social hierarchy and designating degrees of acquaintance.
Chapter Three explores the constituents and conditions of honorific addresses in Korean and Chinese, and identifies the similarities and differences.
Chapter Four compares the systems of subject honorific address in Korean and Chinese. Depending on different subjects, there are direct honorific addresses, indirect ones, and sub-honorific ones, each of corresponding lexical variations.
Chapter Five summarizes the above analysis and points out the similarities and differences of subject honorific addresses in Korean and Chinese languages.
