본고의 목적은 한국어에서 간접화행과 공손표현이 어떤 관계를 맺고 있는지에 두고 있다. 즉 공손표현의 화용론적 조건과 특징을 규명하고자 하는 것이다.
간접화행을 논의할 때 항상 같이 제기된 개념은 공손성이다. 공손은 일반적으로 화용론적 범주에 속하는 것으로 보고 있다. 그런데 한국어의 공손을 다룰 때 빼놓을 수 없는 것은 경어법이다. 경어법은 공손의 전제로서 공손이 실현되는 기반이고 필요조건이다. 따라서 본고는 경어법을 공손의 하위범주로 보고 있고, 공손은 더 큰 범주의 상위범주로 보고 있다. 경어법만으로 공손성을 이루지 못하는 경우에는 간접화행이 기여를 한다. 따라서 공손성 형성조건을 이해하기 위해서는 화용론적 요소를 고려하지 않으면 안 된다. 이에 따라 본고는 우선 공손을 다루기 위하여 기반이 되는 화행의 개념과 분류에 대하여 명확히 하였다. 이것을 기반으로 하여 공손성이 화행에 어떻게 작용하는지를 설명하도록 공손의 원리를 상정하였다.
다음 이러한 공손원리가 화행에 어떻게 작용하는지를 직접화행과 간접화행으로 나누어서 다루었다. 특히 간접화행은 공손을 이루는 중요한 장치로 간주되기 때문에, 공손이 어떤 원리를 통하여 간접화행에 작용하는지에 대하여 살펴보았다. 또한 간접화행은 공손성뿐만 아니라 비공손표현이 되는 경우도 많은데 이에 대하여도 논의가 필요하다. 이러한 분석으로 사람들이 어떤 동기를 가지고 간접화행을 사용하는지에 대하여 알 수 있었다.
또 한국어의 공손성은 대부분 공손원리에 부합하지만, 한국 사회의 특성으로 인하여 일정한 예외가 된 부분도 있다. 어휘나 화용 등 측면으로 한국어 공손표현의 특징에 대한 고찰로, 한국어의 일정한 특성도 반영될 수 있다.

The main purpose of this dissertation is to make it clear about the relationship between indirect speech acts and politeness expressions in Korean. In other words, the goal is to find out the pragmatic precondition and specialties of politeness expressions in Korean.
When the concept of 'Indirect Speech Acts' is presented, the concept of 'Politeness Expressions' is always presented, too. Politeness is generally realized as a concept of pragmatics. But in Korean one thing that cannot be excluded about politeness is the 'Honorifics', which is a prior condition for politeness. So in this dissertation 'Honorifics' is considered as an subordinate concept of politeness. However 'Honorifics' is not the only precondition, in order to achieve a polite expression the pragmatic factors should be considered, too. When 'Honorifics' cannot be a sufficient condition for politeness, indirect speech acts would be used. So the first part of this dissertation is to clarify the concept and classification about 'Speech Acts', which is a basis to submit a Politeness Principle in Korean.
The following part is to see how the Politeness Principle works on an politeness expression. In most of the preexistence researches, 'Indirect Speech Acts' has always been considered as an important way to express politeness. However in this dissertation, not only the function to show politeness, but also the function to show impoliteness of indirect speech act will be discussed.
Moreover, the Politeness Principle cannot apply to all the situations in Korean, because of the specialty of Korean culture. The specialty of Korean can be found out by studying the exceptions of Korean politeness expressions with respect to the factors of vocabulary, pragmatics and the relation between the speaker and the listener.
