The purpose of this study is to categorize ing verbs and analyze their frequency of use. In addition, the patterns translated into Korean are examined. This study analyzes a parallel corpus consisting of the original English texts and their Korean translations.
English ing verbs are categorized largely into three subcategories of verbs: speech-ing verbs, descriptive ing verbs, and transcriptive ing verbs. First, speech-ing Verbs are categorized into neutral structuring ing verbs, metapropositional ing verbs, and metalinguistic ing verbs. Second, descriptive ing verbs are categorized into prosodic ing verbs and paralinguistic ing verbs. Lastly, transcriptive ing verbs are categorized by their relation to other parts of discourse and discourse progress.
Each ing verb is also examined for its frequency of use. The purpose of examining frequency is to give students intuition about which ing verb is used most frequently. Finally, the pattern of Korean translation is analyzed. Three patterns are found from the parallel corpus. The first one is counterpart. Some English ing verbs are translated into their Korean counterparts. The second one is that some English ing verbs are translated into Korean with simply one verb which means just “say” without having its own semantic properties. The third one is that one English ing verb is translated into Korean with an adverb and a simple verb. This case is difficult for Korean students to understand, so this pattern should be carefully taught to Korean students by showing them the differences between English and Korean. The last one is that some ing verbs are translated freely. Their own semantic properties are omitted or ignored in order to express contextual meaning.
The understanding of ing verbs including their categorization and frequencies would help Korean learners read English text more easily, and understanding the difference between Korean and English in translating would help Korean learners avoid making errors due to native language interference in English speaking and writing involving ing verbs.
