Since the agreement of Korean-Chinese diplomatic association and open-door policy after 1990, the cultural exchange between the two countries has expanded to economic exchange. Moreover, Korea's abroad -studying policy has switched from 'sending abroad' to 'receiving from abroad', trying to build a superior high-school education system market and an Asian-education hub through the opening of education system market and internationalization. As the result of the two countries' increasing interchange and the policy of attracting foreign students, the number of Chinese students who come to Korea for studying has increased over the past several years.
Objective of this is to work out ways to systematically assist Chinese students staying in Korea for study in their university environment perception and adjustment to university life by examining the actual conditions and relationship in this regard.
With a view to reach the goal of this study, following queries were posed:
1. What kind of difference is there in the university environment perceived by Chinese students in Korea according to demographic variants?
2. What difference is there in the extent of adaptation to university life of Chinese students in Korea by demographic variants?
3. What relationship exists between the university environment perceived by Chinese students in Korea and their extent of adaptation to university life?
In order to verify the above issues, a survey was conducted to Chinese students enrolled in Wonkwang University. A total of 350 Chinese students were sampled as subjects for this study, including undergraduates, undergraduate exchange students and graduate students in Korea. Questionnaires were prepared and distributed to them to explore relationship between their university environment perception and their adaptation to school life. 321 responses were included in the final analysis of this study. Cronbach's, descriptive analysis, t-test, ANOVA, Post -hoctest and relation analysis were conducted by SPSS 15.0 statistical package.
After comparing the results of this study with the preceding study, the conclusion of this study are as follows:
First, significant difference was revealed in the university environment perception by social status and proficiency of Korean. Graduate students and students who learned Korean over one year before coming to Korea were found to have perceived the university environment much better.
Second, adaptation to university life was subject to a staying period and proficiency of Korean with significant difference.
Depending on the length of stay in Korea, there was significant difference in the adaptation to university life. Chinese students can get the more adaptation the longer the length of their visit.
The analysis of adaptation to university life by the extent of learning Korean featured significant difference. Chinese students who learned Korean over one year before coming to Korea were found to have adapted to Korean life much better than those who learned Korean less than a year or had no experience of learning Korean before came to Korea as regards personal -emotional adaptation and satisfaction with universities they belonged, according to the survey.
Third, the correlation analysis conducted to investigate the relationship between university environment perception and adaptation to university life resulted in positive correlation.
Based on the findings of this study, following suggestions could be offered for further studies that may follow:
First, it is requested to teach students about Korean culture and language before they come to Korea for study. Systematic programs for this purpose should be developed, used and operated actively.
Second, undergraduate students need more help than undergraduate exchange students and graduate students in Korea.
Third, the result shows that Chinese students can adapt better the longer the length of their visit. So the college education in Korea must enforce special programs for the freshmen studying abroad to help them adapt to university life well.
Fourth, there is the relationship between the support of friends and university life. It is important to develop the system introducing Korean students to Chinese students in Korea.
Fifth, when the teacher consult with the students who are studying abroad, it is desired that he or she should supportive and accepting because his or her support is very helpful for the Chinese students studying in Korea.
Sixth, nationwide studies should be carried out on this subject further to the present study which places its focus on the region in Wonkwang University.
Seventh, studies should be conducted in the manner dealing with various elements that are connected with the perception of university environment adaptation and adaptation to university life. Every effort should also be exerted in parallel to develop new tools modified to Korean culture to measure such factors.
