War novels refer to those depicting historical wars with experiences other than war stories as the central story. Among them, Namyunjeon(남윤전), Choicheokjeon(최척전) and Kimyeongcheoljeon(김영철전), whose motif is overseas experiences of the main characters in the novels can be categorized into overseas experience type of war novel.
Namyunjeon depicts the main characters including the hero as being conservative and conventional, which is intended to create the image of a man with Confucian secularism. Choicheokjeon presents three types of a new structure of family, a new image of a woman and a liberal view toward marriage and social consciousness. Kimyeongcheoljeon tells the painful reality of the people and criticizes the absurdity.
These three novels have factors in common in terms of writers' implications, but at the same time, they have their own characteristic aspects. Namyunjeon has the reason for supporting patriarchism and the reason for advocating superiority of Confucian ideas in the center of writer's intention. Choicheokjeon is connected with the intention to the miserable reality of the people due to the war and a wish for a new type of haman being on the basis of unusual experiences of war. Kimyeongcheoljeon is based on the writer's intention to tell the miserable reality of the people due to the war and criticize the absurdity of the system of war stories.
These novels have realistic characteristics in the aspects that;
Namyunjeon presents realistically lax morals, sense of superiority of Japanese civilization and morals; Choicheokjeon offers a new type of human being and presents impressively progressive system of family and marriage; Kimyeongcheoljeon develops realistically suffering life of a popular character and his family and also, criticizes bitterly the absurdity of the period. Therefore, they can be evaluated as having a significance in the history of novels in the point that they served to make Pansori novels(판소리계 소설) and Sino-Korean folk(한문야담) tales approach modern novels.
