This research is intended to better educate beginning learners without knowledge of Chinese characters. Based on using the structure and formation of Chinese character words, this research proposes an effective plan on how to teach Chinese character vocabulary words.
While increasing one’s vocabulary is essential to language acquisition, how to teach it has not been discussed in a large scope. Specifically, when considering words that have features of Chinese characters, it is worthwhile to know how to teach such vocabulary in the Korean language.
Accordingly, this has reviewed the usage of Chinese characters, the direction of teaching Chinese characters in current Korean language classes, and contains a list of Chinese characters for beginners.
Along with it, a means of teaching is presented to expand vocabulary through specific lesson plans, examples, and activities.
Sample classes were held to gauge the effectiveness of using the proposed teaching system. The researcher organized classes with 10 students, meeting ninety minutes each week for five weeks.
In order to grade the learners’ understanding, three tests and interviews were conducted prior, during, and after the final class. As a result, it was found that the learners could understand vocabulary easier. In addition, the learners were able to guess the meaning of unknown words through base words that were studied. They showed good memory retention due to understanding the structure of words beyond simple repetition learning. Through this research, it is proposed that if we make beginning learners recognize words influenced by Chinese characters, they can better understand Korean vocabulary, and use it readily and meaningfully.
Now, students without knowledge of Chinese characters feel a disadvantage to the others because of the difference in ability to acquire new vocabulary, but the teachers usually cannot do much to help this. It is the intention of this research to help these learners increase their vocabulary.
