This purpose of this study is to help international married women in their understanding of Korean culture and to help them get over culture shock in order to better adapt to their social and family life in Korea.
Chapter 2 is based on analysis of educational institutions and the textbook for the International Married Women.
First, Seoul, Gyeongi, Gyeongju were selected in order to analyze Korean language and culture programs and their program systems are presented and problems with their systems are pointed out. The problems are: 1) lack of Korean culture programs for real life. 2) The few programs that are available are not given with any regularity and they show just one side of Korean culture. 3) lack of professional instructors to teach those programs. Next, problems with this textbook are pointed out. They are: 1) A lack of and a need for various visual materials. 2) Need for various activities for effective culture study. 3) Need for various activities to compare and contrast between student`s native culture and Korean culture and to use this knowledge in their daily life.
Next, in order to find the effective culture programs, questionnaires for eleven Korean teachers and sixty-one for the International Married Women in Seoul, Gyeongi, and Gyeongju were given out and the results were analyzed. The results showed the International Married women want to learn about Korean culture, not only Korean language and they struggled with culture-gaps and Korean etiquette in their marriage life. They needed a textbook that has a lot of information about Korean culture elements as well as field-trip classes. The Korean teachers felt that they needed Korean culture classes, but did not know how to apply these lessons in their classes, because they do not know the methods for teaching about Korean culture. Both the teachers and the international married women wanted a specialized textbook to better understand about Korean culture.
In chapter 3, Korean everyday culture for the international married women is presented. The category and items of everyday Korean culture based on formal studies is established. A textbook is proposed that is focused on Korean culture, and it is based on the results of the questionnaires and the pre-studies. Also, in designing the syllabus, 20 chapters were selected based on the pre-studies and questionnaires. For selecting the priority subjects, ten international married women who had lived in Korea for over three years were interviewed and given questionnaires. The results of these were used in the selection of elements for the syllabus. Next three types of classes are presented. They are: 1) verbal lesson for in-door class 2) physical lessons for in-door class 3) field-trip lessons for out-door class. Afterward, three lesson plans, one for each type of class, are shown.
The aim of this study is to help international married women to efficiently adapt to life in Korea as well as marriage life. I am teaching them and felt that they need to learn not only Korean language but also Korean culture.
I suggest that the goal of teaching for them is not only language but also focus on Korean culture. and do not insist just Korean culture, both cultures and I suggest that the best methods for teaching international married women is a focus on both Korean language and culture. Also, it is important that, with regards to culture, both cultures, their native and Korean be integrated into their lives. Also, various textbooks and multi-cultural programs for their husbands should be developed and implemented by professionals and supported by the government.
