This study aims to obtain the dictionary user profiles with regards to dictionary use and preference and to gain the knowledge on vocabulary use according to dictionary types. This compares the effects of the bilingual dictionary(BD) and the monolingual dictionary(MD) on Chinese Korean learners with respect to success rate of dictionary consultation and vocabulary use. Two main research questions were investigated as follows:
1. What kind of dictionary do the Chinese Korean learners prefer, the BD or the MD?
2. What kind of dictionary is more useful for Korean learners' writing between the BD and the MD?
In order to obtain the answers, 20 Chinese students learning intermediate Korean participated in this study. They answered 18 survey questions for the first research question. For the second research question they performed self-observation making a composition.
The findings of this study are as follows.
First, the result of the survey verified that the majority of the Chinese students prefer Chinese-Korean/Korean-Chinese BD to MD. They have not used MD nor even tried to consult MD, because they consider that it is too difficult to use.
Secondly, it was shown that the frequencies of dictionary consultation purposes have different phases depending on the group BD and MD. The group BD consulted more frequently about spelling, existence, and meaning than MD. On the other hand, inflection, grammar, collocation, and register were consulted more frequently when the students used MD.
The success rate of dictionary consultation in different aspects different seemed depending on their consultation purposes. According to the self-observation, the general consultation success rate of BD was higher than MD. With regards to each consultation purpose, spelling, existence, and meaning, consultant rates were higher when the students used BD. MD was superior in the success rate in inflection, grammar, collocation, and synonym consultation.
The success rate of vocabulary use tends to be higher in the group using MD. Therefore, it was found that when the students used MD, they could use the vocabulary which is closer to native Korean.
