Listening is one of important language functions in our daily life. Nowadays, it's very important to deal information from communications because we're living in an information-oriented society. However, many people think that listening is learned naturally without any special educational directions. Education at the schools so far has been focused on the reading and writing consisted of literal language, especially, there are lack of systemized listening guide in the schools to be contrast with other language teaching. At the 7th curriculum, the priority for listening is empathized more than speaking so that it seems to be recognized. However, there are still negligent for development of listening education model, strategies and materials.
Therefore, in this study, listening is regarded as a object of education and recognized as language ability which could be improved through the systemized teaching. The purpose of the study regarding listening is focused on how and what should be taught and get ready for teaching plan.
In this study, to manage the methods and curriculum for improving the ability of listening, the process basis attempt has been adopted. Because the listening is composed of several stages from the listening of voice to comment and giving impression about what have listened. The activity of listening needs gradual teaching style as it is passed through stage of understanding process. Therefore, the study presents course model that gives consideration for each stage that includes before listening, mid-listening activity and after listening by regarding the listening not to completed.
On the before listening step, it is conscious of the sounds and meanings of spoken language. We need purpose and system of listening that activate background knowledge of the listeners. Therefore, here are before listening step's activities ①To set and confirm of listening, ②To set and activate of background knowledge, ③To predict contents and check questions.
On the mid-listening step, it is recognition step that listeners understand, analysis and even criticize meaning of spoken language. They need to select more important information, analysis the structures of meaning and consider the purpose or the intention of speakers. On this step, ①To make a note, ②To understand meaning, ③To analysis structures of meaning are existed.
On after listening step, a high process of thinking is possible. Based on factual, deductive, and critical understanding, on this step, listeners should accomplish a serial of analysis and internalize themselves what they listen. Here are after listening step's activities ①To arrange information systematically, ②To find out implication with the person himself.
The learning contents and specific learning activities on each step are below. First, to introduce concept of the learning and necessity of teaching listening. Second, to describe teaching skills and process with matters to be attended to. At last, to introduce teaching plan and model related to learning contents and activities.
In this study, the listening materials are selected from the 7th curriculum Korean textbook for a middle school. This is not only objectivity and reliability of the materials but also to be sure that groups of study are middle school students. Also, this study is integrated teaching plan among entire Korean studying on speaking, reading, writing, etc.
There is no practical or specific teaching plans for Korean listening until now, students and even teachers need those. I hope the relevant learned circles must keep trying to improve teaching method for Korean listening, so there will be more practical and effective teaching plan in real schools.
