Most of Korean sentences are complex sentences which consisted of main clause and embedded clause. These complex sentences have more than one predicate and this causes various syntactic ambiguities in syntactic analysis. The most of syntactic ambiguity appears according to the scope of embedded clause and the attachment of predicate and noun phrases, "NP(Noun Phrase) / VP(Verb Phrase)" or "VP / NP". These syntactic ambiguities are solved by deciding a scope of embedded clause. We use sentence patterns information(SPI) to decide a scope of embedded clause.
Korean language exist some restrictions on a type of particle and noun for each predicate. This structural type, which a sentence has, is called sentence patterns information. In this , attachment problem of syntactic ambiguity and scope of embedded clause are solved by using SPI which is classified for characteristics of Korean from subcategorization information of the predicate. Therefore, SPI are classified by predicate. Also, to include of compound sentence structure, SPI are extended. 31 verbs SPI and 8 adjectives SPI are used in this .
To decide a scope of embedded clause, we use SPI and syntactic properties of Korean. First, we split the complex sentence into embedded clause and main clause by the method that embedded clause must have maximum essential argument using SPI. This work is done by the SPI of the predicate in the embedded clause. And then, the role of this embedded clause is converted into a noun phrases or adverbial phrases in the main clause by the properties of Korean syntax. By this method, the structure of complex sentence is exchanged into a clause. And some phrases attachment problem, which is mainly caused by the modifying scope, is resolved easily. In this , we call this method embedded clausal segmentation.
We propose a method for resolving such attachment problem by using SPI in the conditional unification based CFG grammar environment. SPI is used to identify Korean, which has partially free word order. Sentence patterns are good constraint for parsing in dealing with attachment problem in embedded clause. Also, SPI are good information for processing in adverbial phrases, a commutative particle, dual-subject and dual-object. By empirical results of parsing 1000 sentences, we found that our method decreases 88.32% of syntactic ambiguities compared to the method that doesn't use SPI and split the sentence with basic clauses.
