Many Korean students have difficulty using and discriminating between the English present perfect and past tense because of native language influence. The Korean past tense suffix, /-었/, is extensively substituted for the present perfect tense, so Korean learners of English have a strong tendency to use the past tense when the present perfect would be the right form required in English. The goal of this thesis is to compare and contrast the present perfect tense of English with the past tense in English and Korean respectively. Exercises dealing with the present perfect and past tense will be extensively analyzed over the course of this .
The first half of this covers the aspect of the present perfect tense. Common categories for discussing the aspect on the present perfect tense in English include: continuation up to the present(the state up to the present, the habit up to the present, the indefinite past), present result, current relevance. When native Korean speakers express the English present perfect indicating the state up to the present, the habit up to the present, and current relevance, the chance of the errors will be high because the Korean past tense suffix, /-었/, covers most of present perfect tense in these three areas. However, when Korean students express the English present perfect to indicate the indefinite past or a present result, the chance of the errors will be less. Korean present perfect grammar indicating indefinite past or present result have clear markers in Korean such as /-었었/, /-ㄴ적/, and /-ㄴ일/, or time adverbials such as /벌써/ and /막/.
The latter half of this analyzes different types of exercises dealing with the present perfect and past tenses. The types of exercises are grouped according to the method of practice: multiple choice, drill practice, substitution, and communicative exercises. The multiple choice method is effective for students to learn the concepts of the present perfect and past tenses. Students at this level are unable to comprehend the deeper meanings of these two tenses. Drill practice is effective for students to practice the forms and usage of present perfect and past tense. Likewise, substitution is useful for students to learn certain forms of expression by modeling and repeating. These two types of exercises, however, are limiting for students who want to learn the natural usage of these two tenses in real situations. Exercises which are based on a communicative approach have the leaners focus on activities which are more interesting and natural to specific real life situations.
When the teacher is aware of the differences between the present perfect and past tenses, then he or she use and adapt the different kinds of exercises to enable the language learners to make appropriate progress.
