In Korea, English has been a primary foreign language in Korean education system. Everyone is very enthusiastic to learn it even before they enter primary school. Some people invest a lot of money and time to learn English. However, as a Korean native speaker, it is also important to consider and learn some of English speaking culture. Otherwise, the different cultural background could cause significant miscommunications.
So far, we have studied English as a language, but we have left some points out of consideration. It is important to know English speaker's cultural background, and the usages, which are used in certain situation. Then we can understand English well instead of just memorizing it. If the final goal of teaching foreign language is communication, and by understanding their a way of thinking, a way of life, a sense of values, and the situational context, we can achieve very successful conversation with English speakers.
Most of the researches so far analyzed and studied the syntax and linguistical aspects of verbs. Or some empathized just the importance of cultural awareness in learning English. However, this thesis attempts to highlight some of the important aspects of the second culture acquisition once more, and also through analyzing the verb 'come' and 'go', try to reduce the culture shock and misunderstanding, which might be caused by the contextual difference between English and Korean.
Many English learner in Korea still get confused when they learn some usages such as 'come' and 'go', because it seems that there's only similarities to Korean verbs(오다, 가다), but, in fact, there is some opposite meanings in use. The result of this thesis shows us that there is a lot of improvement of English learners once they understand the cultural difference and background when some certain expressions are used.
Learning language is not only just studying the language but also involving the acquisition of second identity, so we as teachers should be aware of the importance of the way how we teach the students in the classroom.
