Due to the increase of international marriages and foreign workers, Korea is rapidly moving toward a multicultural society. The social changes have caused many problems in educating children from multicultural families. So we need to solve those problems by developing effective teaching methods.
This study aims to propose methods of applying classical texts to the education of children from multicultural families. For that purpose I modified and reorganized the contents of the middle school literature curriculum from the viewpoints of multicultural education and classical education.
There can be three ways of educating children from multicultural families: that is, education based on curriculum, education based on texts prepared for students of different levels, and education based on both curriculum and texts. Therefore, I proposed three models of appling classical texts to the education of children from multicultural families: they are called ‘Curriculum-based Model’, ‘Text-based Model’, and ‘Eclectic Model’. Each has two subordinate models.
The first model is subdivided into ‘Integrated Education Model’ for all sorts of children and ‘Separate Education Model’ for only the children from multicultural families. The second model is only for the children from multicultural families, and is also subdivided into ‘Grade-based Education Model’ and ‘Level-based Education Model’. The third model is the one for all children and is subdivided into ‘Grade-based Integrated Education Model’ and ‘Level-based Separate Education Model’.
From among the six education models I chose ‘Grade-based Integrated Education Model’ and ‘Level-based Separate Education Model’, and presented the actual application of the models using both “The Tiger in the Tales” and “Uturi, the Baby Warrior”.
In conclusion, if we apply classical texts to multicultural education we will be able to help multicultural children improve their ability to speak Korean and understand Korean culture better. It will also help all kinds of children understand and accept cultural diversity, build the ability to communicate in the multicultural society and cultivate an affirmative sense of self-identity.
