The thesis attempts to elucidate a method of using dictionary in the Korean vocabulary education for foreigners. The purpose of the research is ,therefore, to suggest the improved methods to help foreign students to make the best use of vocabulary both qualitatively and quantitatively.
Chapter I describes the purpose of the thesis, its methodology, and the necessity of vocabulary education in teaching Korean language. This chapter also summarizes literature reviews on vocabulary education.
Chapter Ⅱ examines educational methods and theories on a lexical item, vocabulary power, and lexical type.
Chapter Ⅲ analyzes Korean dictionaries in theirs types, focusing on the relations among synonym, antonym, and vocabulary collocation. In general, Korean dictionaries are classified into four types: monolingual dictionary, bilingual dictionary, multilingual dictionary, and online dictionary. In this chapter the study suggests that a variety of dictionaries such as semantic dictionary, synonym dictionary, antonym dictionary and collocation dictionary should be developed. The study also has an emphasis on the facts that the meaning of colloquial language should be explained in detail and that the usages of vocabularies should be presented.
Chapter Ⅳ explains how to take advantage of dictionaries and suggests dictionary aided vocabulary instructional models. Furthermore, the instructional models to educate foreign students are presented. The empirical results of the collocation instructional models are shown in Table 6.
The vocabulary instructional models are designed to let learners make use of dictionaries and their word notebook in class. The models would allow them to improve their vocabulary in quantity and quality. That is, the use of word notebooks would enable them to keep remembering acquired vocabularies and extending additional vocabularies.
Chapter V summarizes the study and presents further studies.
