This study is aimed to improve Korean communicative competence of foreign learners by ‘adverbials /verb' pattern of Korean collocation. For a effective teaching of ‘adverbials /verb' collocations, this study suggests the list of ‘adverbials /verb' collocations by grades and presents concrete teaching methods of them.
This study is divided up into five chapters. Chapter 1 presented the purpose, methods and subjects of this study and introduces the established researches on the collocation.
Chapter 2 showed the concept of the lexical collocation as follow : Collocation is those combinations of two and more words which are selecting words(selector) and selected words(selectee) relations and highly co-occurred each other. Also the compound of selecting words(selector) and selected words(selectee) is transparent semantically. Next, types of collocation is classified and 'adverbials /verb' collocations which are the main objectives of this study is subclassified in three types in accordance. This chapter also discuss the lexical information that consists of semantic, syntactic and pragmatic information and two teaching methods that ‘Presentation-
Practice-Production’ methodology suggested by Communicative Language Teaching(CLT) and ‘Observation-Hypothesis-Experiment’ methodology by the Lexical Approach for teaching vocabulary.
Chapter 3 analyzed the current state of teaching ‘adverbials / verb' collocations in the Korean textbooks of Kyung Hee University, Seokang University, Seoul National University, Yonsei University and Ewah University focused on the method, level, and the number of presentation of them.
Chapter 4 compiled 302 ‘adverbials /verb' collocations based on various texts and suggested a list of them selected the grade of them by teaching items by level, frequency by Korean native speakers and the quantity of lexical information that they have.
Chapter 5 suggested practical teaching methods of ‘adverbials / verb' collocations selected in the previous chapter. First of all, it was divided levels into beginning grade(level 1&2), intermediate grade(level 3&4), and advanced grade. And it was designed 6 teaching models for ‘adverbials / verb' collocations based on ‘Presentation-Practice-Production’ methodology and ‘Observation-
Hypothesis-Experiment’ methodology.
Finally chapter 6 summarized this . Also this chapter presented the possibilities of application and limitation of this study, and the subjects for further studies.
'Adverbials / verb' collocations are an important factor that enables non-native Korean speakers to express delicately psychology, actions, conditions of speakers, listeners, and the subjects like native Korean speakers. Therefore, for non-native Korean speakers, it is expected that Korean communicative competence will be improved more fluently and naturally through the systemized education on ‘adverbials / verb' collocations.
