In this study, the effects of acculturation stress for Korean culture on academic immersion and achievement was investigated for foreign students in Korean language institute.
The questionnaire data was analyzed in 5% significant level with SPSS 12.0 with statistical program, the following main results were drawn.
First, as a result of correlation analysis between acculturation stress for Korean culture and academic immersion, they showed statistically significant negative correlation. This result means that the higher acculturation stress for Korean culture causes the lower academic immersion. Subdivision factors of academic immersion such as self-conception, learning attitude and learning habit also showed negative correlation with acculturation stress for Korean culture. Therefore it was verified that acculturation stress for Korean culture had negative effects on self-conception, learning attitude and learning habit.
Second, as a result of regression analysis, it was verified that factors such as perceptional discrimination, perceptional prejudice, communication and cultural shock and alienation had negative effects on academic immersion. The relative impact was in order of perceptional discrimination, cultural shock and alienation, perceptional prejudice and communication.
Third, as a result of subdivisional comparative analysis for academic achievement, there was no significant difference in acculturation factors such as communication and conscience between the lower and the higher group for acculturation stress for Korean culture. On the contrary, in factors such as perceptional discrimination, home-sick, perceptional prejudice, cultural shock and alienation, the lower group for acculturation stress for Korean culture showed the higher academic achievement. In comprehensive analysis, it was verified that the lower acculturation stress for Korean culture had positive effects for academic achievement enhancement for foreign students studying Korean language.
