Honorific expressions in the Korean language are very important for understanding the Korean language, life style and culture. Through honorific expressions, Koreans express respect and manners as well as close relationships. It is rather easy for Chinese learners of the Korean language to understand the "honorific expressions" of the Korean language, since the Chinese language has them as well. However, the honorific expressions in modern Chinese are not as highly developed, which causes difficulties for Chinese learners of the Korean language.
To examine effective methods of teaching Korean honorific expressions, the author of this study, in the second chapter, analyzes the similarities and differences between Korean honorific expressions and their Chinese counterparts and, in the third chapter, anaylzes the errors that Chinese learners make when they use Korean honorific expressions. In the fourth and last chapter, methods for teaching Korean honorific expressions are presented. In each section, texts, teaching plans for those texts, and evaluations are inserted to make lessons on Korean honorific expressions more interesting and dynamic.
First of all, concerning methods for teaching special honorific and modest expressions, the words that are used in each case are explained. Students are asked to write sentences using those words (this is a traditional grammar teaching method). To teach the honorific expressions which are used for subjects, texts are introduced involving family relationships which are expressed using the honorific particles ‘-kkeseo', ‘-keseoneon', and ‘-si-’, and learners are asked to write about their family and to present their writing. For relative honorific expressions, an auslaut table is used to practice the variations; further practice is done in partners through role play. Teachers must use some of the class time for checking student writing homework, reading, listening, and speaking. For teaching objective honorific expressions, game teaching methods are introduced in order to review the many expressions learned in previous classes. Students are asked to provide these expression in sentences where subjects or objects are omitted.
Since South Korean society is changing rapidly, and since the number of nuclear families is increasing, people do not have as many chances to use honorific expressions, and it is becoming harder to preserve them. However, the honorific expressions of the Korean language must be properly taught by teachers of Koreans and foreigners, and by parents. I hope that, through learning the honorific expressions of the Korean language, foreigners learning Korean can come to understand the beauty of Korean culture and customs.
