Idioms are unique expressions based on peoples lifestyles and their cultural and national characteristics. Linguistically, Korea and Japan have the same word order and geographically, they are neighboring countries. Accordingly, Koreans who have learned Japanese tend to misuse Japanese idioms because both countries belong to the Chinese culture area.
In this thesis, I want to show how idiomatic phrases related to some parts of our body are expressed in Korea and Japan, excluding some topics such as literature and life style expressed differently.
Against this backdrop the study compares "Idioms using body parts to express emotional feelings"among idioms adopting body parts in Korean and Japanese languages to help learners of Japanese language better understand idioms using body parts and thereby tried to examine the co-relations between body parts and emotional feeling.
The study discovered that using body parts to express emotional feelings were more common in the Korean language than the Japanese in general and "heart"tends to be mostly widely used to express emotional feelings in both languages in general. However, in the case of expressions to express anger, quite obviously "belly"is most commonly used in Japanese, while in the case of shame "face" was more commonly used in both Korean and Japanese which is an exceptional case.
The analysis of the use of body parts in idioms could also be seen as an examination to understand the characteristics of the peoples represented in their use of idioms, which have been established based on unique environment, culture and way of life over a long period of time, while going beyond the issue of idioms.
