The purpose of this thesis is to establish a language-literaryculture immersion learning method of Korean literary education which contributes in improving foreigners' Korean language ability with various intention of studying.
The extent of literary education is very wide and various in Korean education for foreigners. Given the fact that literary education has not been discussed fully and only partial study is making progress on the researches of using literary works as materials for culture education, using literary works themselves such as poem, novel, and tale etc, or using literary works as secondary linguistic materials, literary education doesn't seem to be formed groundwork yet. Accordingly, I introduce some problems of literary education in language education and suggest solutions on them. Being practical and significant materials for learning language, literary works have been given little attention for their importance. Some scholars argue that literary works little help to improve communication skills while they could help to improve reading skills. Other scholars asserte that culture in literature is just culture in the past days and stressful to students because of syntactic complexity, linguistic difficulty of colloquial structure and new vocabulary. These negative views may cause literary works not to be placed in their position. The method of education, however, has changed from teacher-centered education to learner-centered education as learning purpose of student got various. This change stimulates leaners' motive and reinforces their academic performance, learning variables being reflected in teaching-learning method properly. Foreign Korean learners are getting reach a sense of accomplishment at a high standard, because their learning period gets longer by studying, working and marriage in Korea. Therefore they need more practical and integrated materials rather than simple educational textbooks. Literary not only fosters Korean learning and linguistic performance ability by grasping the meaning of a word from the context, but also shows nature of literary by metaphor and symbol. As ordinary language has changed to literary language, learners can not depend on dictionary to find the meaning anymore, and they have to elaborate the meaning expanding their imagination by applying background of works, characters, context and situations. Following this course, the literary ability of students comes up high. Foreign Korean learners want to experience more academic education rather than pragmatistic education for daily life to accomplish study goal successfully. Literary s looks proper materials of Korean language, literature and culture for whom request more advanced education and for whom try to reach level of higher goal in studying Korean. Consequently, literary works will be selected as the best linguistic materials according to the change of learner's demand naturally.
This study aims to suggest a integrated teaching-learning method considering all situation of language, literature and culture by using various literary works for students who have different learning goal from each other. This kind of methodology of teaching is known as a learning goal centered methodology focusing on giving classes classified by distinctive studying purpose. Namely, the class of literature takes own situation of learners in KFL/KSL into consideration more carefully. The goal of integrated education of literature corresponds to increasing demand of foreign students, immigrants or migrant workers quantitatively and qualitatively.
For above reasons, I deals with basic matters including true meaning of education of literature in Korean language education and relation between Korean language education and literary education. First of all, I classify Korean language teaching materials for foreigners by general textbooks and textbooks with special purpose and analyze distribution according to genre and subject. For a reliable and objective analysis, I examine and select s which listed more than three times in Korean language textbooks for elementary and middle school from national foundation era through the 7th education curriculum as a literary works in Korean education for foreigners. For selecting literary works in Korean learning for foreigners, I examined textbooks not for foreigners but for Korean students. The reason is, as I argue, that the learning standard of foreign students would be adjusted upward equivalent level with Korean students.
At recent times when the goal of Korean language study has been diversified, learners demand also began to be various and need for the change of setting up became inevitable. For establishing goal of literary education for Korean language learners, I research education goals and contents of major Korean education institution which is charged with Korean education and curriculum. I set up basic goals first after due considering of language, literature and culture, and then establish education goals of primary, intermediate and advanced level respectively. Furthermore, I create general goals first and then additional and concrete goals as each learning goal is divided into details. For setting up education goals and objectives, I base my arguments on the principles and forms of integrated Korean education. To develop one's language ability, integrated study of literary and culture is essential to avoid established teaching-learning methods focusing on acquiring linguistic skills only. The integrated literary education seems to be most effective methodology to learners who have diverse requirements for learning, for it can foster ability of language, culture and literature at the same time.
I also propose usefulness of literary works in Korean language education and the criteria for selection of works for literary education. Then I suggest a list of literary works selected in Korean language textbooks by learning steps. Among proposed works, "The Story of Rabbit" and "A Shower" were selected to propose 'linguistic centered teaching-learning method', 'culture centered teaching-learning method' and 'literature centered teaching-learning method for students with advanced level. Using literary works makes integrated class possible depending on teaching method. Students can investigate their lives actively with broad point of view, experiencing various life in literary works indirectly. They achieve desired effect of language study when they experience specific culture through various literary works and accept it into their lives not as just knowledge. The indirect experience through literary works is valuable in motivating students. The present author hopes that this study, integrated Korean literary education will be useful teaching and learning methodology which helps learner to achieve each learning goals and objectives.
