The theory of the metropolitan planning based on public transportation system, which was reflection of the issues of environmental pollution, traffic jam, and damage on natural resources per the development of vehicle travel, is adapted and applied by domestic/international researchers and officials around subway stations. Meanwhile, the concepts of compacted city, new-urbanism, TOD and urban village discuss the major planning factors around public transportation area such as condensed development, combination of uses, development for pedestrian, open space, encouraging community activity. The city of Seoul has achieved some stated major factors of metropolitan planning by promoting the development of public transportation area. However, the provision of public facility around mass transportation system was not fully considered in the dimension of the combination of the uses and encouraging community activities. Since the public facility of metropolitan is one of major factors influencing on life pattern/quality of people in the city, the various demand on the public facility along with the improvement of life quality of people in the city has been increased. As the response of the demand, the compact city theory proposes a strategy to induce the absorption of community services by providing public facility around mass transportation area in order to implement the continuous public space around mass transportation area. Nevertheless, the research in which type and the capacity of public facility needed around transportation area in the city of Seoul is not fully investigated. Thus, the purpose of the research is to contribute the idea of provision of public facility supporting continuous community services around public transportation area by conducting the investigation of current status and policy of public facility around mass transportation system in the city of Seoul. In this research, the mass transportation area of the city of Seoul was classified into the different types such as employment, residential, and complex mass transportation area. The solution of the supply of public facility is proposed based on the available public facility area unit per a resident (total public facility area / total number of resident of area _ m2/person) with the characteristics of the 4 different types of public facility (sports center, library, cultural center, children day care). Furthermore, it is analyzed the required capacity and the available area/individual per region in Seoul to ensure the continuity with Residential planning of Seoul in the future. Base on the research, the supply of public facility in the metropolitan area of Seoul throughout all forms of facility is very sound. It is speculated that it has been resulted through the strategic land development along with the concentration of city functions. East/North area of Seoul around the complex mass transportation area showed the lack of the three types of public facility as sports center, library and children day care, compared to the average of the city of Seoul. Based on the fact that East/North area of Seoul is the most populated region, it is very necessary to develop a strategy to focus the provision of public facility around mass transportation area in East/North area of Seoul. In the area of East/South Seoul, the three types of public facility got under supplied except library. Especially, the sport facility shows the great lack in the area. It is considered it is caused by the limited supply of public facility for high land/development cost around the area. It will be effective to induce the development by policy, the use of public land or promoting the remodel/expansion of the current facility. In general, West/ South area of Seoul shows the below average supply of public facility. But, the supply of the two types of public facility as cultural center and children day care is reasonable around region of the mass transportation. It is believed the provision of public facility is based on the function of city area per departing location with residential function. It is need to provide sports facility and library around residential mass transportation area at first and various public facility around employment mass transportation area as Yeoydo, Youngdungpo, Kooro. It will promote the general improvement of public services in West/South area of Seoul. In case of West/South area of Seoul, the supply of the three types of public facility except children day care shows above average of the city around the complex mass transportation area. But, the residential mass transportation in departing location shows the lack of public facility. It is required to provide public facility around the residential mass transportation area and expand the supply around the complex mass transportation area to improve the convenience of the resident. The data analyzed and sorted for 5 different regions were difficult to clarify the unbalance of supply to the public facility. Therefore, the data, as per the available area per a resident, by deducing to mass transportation area in the community area of Seoul were considered in order to secure the connectivity with the region planing of Seoul. also considered for the continuity with the region planning of Seoul by inducing the available area per a resident with the region in the mass transportation area as it is hard to quantify the disparity of the public facility supply. Based on the supply planning of public facility per the different types of mass transportation area, the public or private future development around mass transportation area can be benefited for various public services and industrial and social activities.
