With the recent development of mass media, art changes quickly and diversely and becomes globalized at an alarming speed. With the influence of globalization of art through the development of mass media, present performing art gradually integrates various genres and diversifies performing means. In addition to combining such diverse art areas as painting, dance, music and images, present performances include sport, martial arts and circus, thus producing a new form of performance. This genre integration seems to be a most unique characteristic and trend in the circles of performing culture and art for the present. Due to the development of mass media, K-culture has been very popular since the late 1990s. As K-culture stars become popular and visiting tourists who want to see them increase, the circles of domestic performing art and culture are growing. The term entertourment reflects this trend. Korean culture attracts global attention and the fever of K-culture makes domestic performing culture enter overseas market. Attracting visiting foreigners who are interesting in Korean culture becomes an important national business. With this stream and fever of K-culture, non-verbal performances, a novel form of performance, finally started its journey to satisfy and attract foreign visitors of diverse nationalities, by appropriately combining Korean culture and foreign narrative structures. A non-verbal performance is a genre of performing art which using diverse elements except language and developing a drama. As domestic representative non-verbal performances, there are <Nanta> which mainly uses beating instead of language and <The Ballerina Who Loves a B-Boy> and <Jump> which mainly use movements. The first non-verbal performances are <stomp> and <tubes> produced in the early days of 1990s. As <stomp> and <tubes> achieved a worldwide success, interest in a genre of non-verbal performance which develops a drama not with language but with non-verbal elements increased. In 1997, <Nanta>, a first domestic non-verbal performance, was produced and gained a great success. Since then, numerous non-verbal performances have been produced and performed in important national events, thus making non-verbal performances positioned as an important tourist product that attracting foreign visitors who are interested in Korean culture. Language is a most basic and direct method of human communication. However, it is very difficult to communicate with foreigners whose language is different. In this regard, language is an easiest way of human communication as well as a most difficult means of communication. As non-verbal performances have no language barrier, foreigners can enjoy it. However, if other artistic elements do not appropriately substitute for the role of language and a performance cannot communicate with audience, the performance cannot be successful. A requisite of a successful performance, namely a good performance, seems to be its communicative role between an artist who firsthand realizes arts in a stage and audience who enjoy it. Although about 50 non-verbal performances have been produced actually since then <Nanta>, their communication with audience was not desirable and many of them were assessed as 'a ceremonial' performance. In addition, there are few performances which continue to be performed to date. No language barrier to foreigners in a performance can be an advantage point, but it can be a crucial disadvantage point as well when its communication with them is not properly achieved. The means of non-verbal communication include such diverse methods as movements, music, painting and facial expressions, but the author chose 'music' as a most important element that substitute for the role of 'language' in a non-verbal performance and examined its use and effects in this study. Music either creates the mood of a drama, or displays the feature of characters, or plays the role of language in a performance. For example, in the second movement of Beethoven's Pastoral Symphony that describes the banks of a stream and the beautiful looks of field, flute is used to present the chirping of nightingale, oboe is used to describe the warbling of a quail, and clarinet is used to display the singing of a cuckoo. In the fourth movement, a tremolo technique, namely a continuous repetition of a same sound, describes thunder and storm. The role of music is important in all the performances, but its importance in a non-verbal performance seems to be more crucial. Therefore, the use of music instead of language will make difference in the completion of a performance. In this study, the conception of non-verbal performance and the current status of its performance in Korea and overseas countries were examined as a theoretical background. In addition, the characteristic of non-verbal performance was looked into as well. In the main part, <Music Shaw Wedding>, which used music as a core element of non-verbal performance, was chosen and analyzed in relation to its superficial structure, narrative structure and in-depth structure. In addition, its use of music instead of language was analyzed, together with its performance effect according to the use of diverse genres and instruments. The author hopes study findings will be used as basic data on the establishment of effective methods and strategies for the production of non-verbal performances in the future.
