This study examined the loss of value in human residential modes for original life as such human residential modes have undergone fragmentation, individualization, and concentration throughout social, economic, and cultural realms over the last several decades. Thus, studies have been conducted to investigate in-depth solutions in various fields based on important critical mind taking approach to social issues One of factors that led to dull urban residential environment is the boundary. The study intended to examine the lifestyle that could help restore original life and were suited to contemporary times based on the approach of favorable relationship (relationship- orientedness) conducive to contact, communication and sharing among object circumstances of residential environment by expanding the boundary phenomenon, which led to disconnection and isolation among environments, into a concept of sharing. Korean residential environment has been deteriorated artificially by external pressures over the last century. The unique appearance of residential environment has deteriorated over the last 3 to 4 generations. Such deterioration has clearly resulted in urban residential congestion, road expansion to accommodate the increase in car traffic, and relegation of real properties into commodities due to soaring value. Under such circumstances, human beings failed to establish the concept of residence and have repeated the life of being adrift and mired in co-alienation. Multi-family houses that comprise the largest proportion of dwelling units are analogous to functional machine supporting contemporary lives. The mediating elements can be transformed as shared value, the media of communication, particularly because they are considered as the boundary elements within house. The clue to the status of boundary as original residential environment could be identified from the relationship found in microscopic biological phenomenon of natural evolution based on the notion of residence posited by Martin Heidegger, notion of relationship-oriented life extrapolated by Jan Gehl, and organic characteristics posited by Gilles Deleuze, depending on how the boundary is perceived. Important basis was provided for recognition of residential environment as the essential notion of boundary communicating through the recognition of boundary. The concept and status of boundary elements were determined with a focus on small multi-family house in connection with current segmented urban residential environment, and the concept of boundary which restored such segmented residential environment was characterized through several methods to establish the relationship between essence of boundary and boundary elements of residential environment so as to illustrate the elements of residential environment issues. In this experiment, it was found that physical boundary elements of residential environment could be applied as the elements for approach as a concept of communication. First, the essential meaning of residential environment was tracked and data from preceding studies were analyzed and reestablished for the concept of residential environments significant in contemporary era. To examine the innate factors of boundary forming important point in the restoration of relationship of residential environment, the study derived the characteristics of connectivity, locality, reciprocity by reinterpreting the concept of boundary manifested in residential environment from the standpoint of relationship based on organic relationship extracted from the concept of inframince and membrane, i.e., the concept of innateness of membrane exhibited in microscopic biological phenomenon of natural evolution. Second, the study examined the trend of human life patterns at city level over the last several decades and found that such trend was manifested as changing elements of boundary which were physical, psychological, and cultural elements in natural, psychological, and social environment units with respect to the effect that the boundary elements in urban residential environment would have on human residential environment in order to analyze the status of small multi-family house boundary space as the most typical sample of urban residential environment. Third, the study could identify the contact points, where events and communications occur, at points of various units by linking each element extracted from object environment(nature, human, and society) and small multi-family house boundary space. Modes of human life lead to residence and contact based on selective activities among indispensable activities, selective activities, and public activities. The study could find potential feasibility that could generate inter-element relationship of sharing through intervention of element-based changes into physical environment of residential environment, dismantling of existing one-size-fits-all boundary elements into new perspectives, and functional, psychological, and social interactivity of boundary elements such as encounter, communication, privacy, etc., through combination. In conclusion, the concept of boundary was determined as a notion of operation of the great nature, not the element of dimension individualizing and dividing, and has been maintained in essential manner conducive to promoting relation among all lives and phenomenon for a long time. Residence was found to lead to formation of contact point through boundary and sharing of all things through communication. Sharing of alienated life could be restored by incorporating the essential value of such residential mode into physical boundary elements of urban residential environment. However, in consideration of various statuses of small multi-family house in downtown, specific findings of this study may represent incipient stage.
