In recent years, political, economical, cultural and educational exchanges between Korea and India have witnessed a rapid increase. Relations between India and Korea have become truly multidimensional. Cultural and historical contacts between Korea and India date back to ancient times. According to “The heritage history of the three kingdoms” which was written in the 13th century, a princess from Ayodhya named Suriratna traveled to Korea, married King Kim-Suro and became Queen Hur Hwang-ok in 48 AD. Lives and thoughts of the people of Korea and India have also been influenced by Buddhism. Both the countries experienced colonial rule for a very long time and various kinds of anti-colonial movements. India experienced colonialism for much longer period of time than Korea. Korea was under the rule of Japan, whereas India was under the rule of The Great Britain. As both the countries were suffering from brutal hardships under the colonial rule they got interested in each other during the colonial period. The purpose of this study is to analyze the condition of lower class people of both Korea and India during the colonial period. Historically both the countries suffered a common phase and the realist novels that were published during this time in both the countries had a lot of things in common. Being under the rule of such powerful countries brought different kinds hardships to the citizens of Korea and India. The people who suffered the most were from the lower class. Poor people were exploited by upper classes and there was a lot of discrimination faced by the needy people. Lower class people were able to make an earning by doing various unsuitable jobs even if they suffered hardships and exploitation doing such jobs. The condition of women was also not good in both the countries. Problems faced by the lower class were depicted in novels by writers of that time in both Korea and India. Literature was used as a tool to represent the hardships of the poor people under colonial rule. British wanted to secure a monopolistic trading position in India. British capitalists wanted to make India a huge market for British goods and source of raw materials. They made huge investments in India and enjoyed monopolistic privileges. India also provided a lot of interesting and lucrative job opportunities to a large number of British upper middle-class people. British replaced wasteful warlord aristocracy by a bureaucratic-military establishment which helped in maintaining law and order in India during the colonial period. The British did not try to improve production techniques in agriculture and made no changes in the caste system or the position of untouchables. Indian subcontinent suffered economic, political and social exploitation under British rule. During the colonial period, Western literature had an intensive impact on Indian literature. Indian literature was highly influenced by English literature which helped in the development of various kinds of novels, short-stories, s and dramas. Works of Shakespeare were translated into several Indian languages and literature in India was enriched by the western impact during the colonial period. This research focuses on the comparative analysis of the condition of lower classes in Korea and India during the colonial rule. Three realist novels of both the countries have been compared to understand the similarities and differences between the problems faced by lower class people and how upper-class people took advantage of poor people for their own benefit. Kim dong In’s “Potato” is compared with Jainendra Kumar’s “Sunita”, Hyun-Jin Geon’s “A lucky day” with Jaishankar Prasad’s “Young Magician” and Cheo So Hae’s “Bakdol’s death” with R. K. Narayan’s “Iswaran”. These novels show the dark side of the colonial rule. Through these stories, we can understand that patriarchal society existed in both the countries and women were not given the respect they deserved. Poor people were exploited and were forced to serve as slaves to the upper class. People faced discrimination and died due to hunger and poverty. Lower class could not fulfill their basic necessities such as food, shelter, medical facilities etc. Through this kind of comparison of realist novels of both the colonies, we can get a better idea of problems of colonialism and how closely literature is connected to it. Whether its Korea or India both the countries suffered different kinds of hardships in many ways. Lower class in Korea and India faced similar problems and exploitation. Authors of both the countries have represented conditions of poverty-stricken people in different styles. The description of different characters and their problems varies according to the point of view of the writers. In this study, the historical background of Korea and India has been analyzed. Historical background of both the countries helps to understand the problems faced by Korea under Japanese rule and condition of India under British rule. This study also compares the characters of some selected realist novels and their various life situations during the colonial period in Korea and India. These realist novels provide a better understanding of how the writers during the colonial period used literature as a tool to incite patriotism among the people of all classes of society. The writers used their excellent skills to show the actual problems and the extent of exploitation suffered by the lower class in their novels which could not be seen in the newss or magazines. Literature was being used as a tool to make people realize how important it was to end the brutal rule of Japan in Korea and Britain in India. This study is basically a comparison of Korean and Indian literature during the colonial period. This research would help in a better understanding of similarities and differences between the colonial literature of the two important Asian countries Korea and India.
