This analyzes the characteristics of Ars Electronica Festival and International Symposium on Electronic Art(ISEA henceforth.), and studies about the benchmarking cases on media art events in Korea. Media art, which is different from traditional visual art as rapidly changing technologies, have needed a new art form, way of appreciation, and exhibition form. So that such festival and symposium for the media art are required the other independent way of exhibition and program unlike formal art exhibition and biennale. However, there are a certain level of differences between these and some events in Korea which have programs only focused on the convergence of art and science. Ars Electronica Festival does not only provide its spatial background for the media art and conference, but also shows how the participatory program for local community using the characteristics of media art facilitates the public participation and the harmony with local society. ISEA has been providing the comprehensive interdisciplinary conferences and the public program such as Media Façade for the understanding about the social meaning of media art, and it contributes to expand the coverage of discourses. In this regard, this thesis tries to research about the various components of media art event such as its operation situation, the composition of program, the strategic characteristics through visiting in the actual event places. Especially, this thesis also tries to focus on how the media art event generates the participation of local community and in what ways the media art integrates into the local society. In the second chapter first, it provides the process of formation of those two media art events and its operation situation in the history. Ars Electronica Festival was appeared as a pilot project at first, then showed its stable structure through the division and supplementation of its functions into the establishment of Prix Ars Electronica, Ars Electronica Center and Futurelab in turn. ISEA is operated by its International foundation. ISEA does not only put its importance on the operation of conference but also provides the exhibition · screening, performance, public program, workshop, satellite event, and ISEA annual general meeting. It reflects the political · social · cultural environment of the city as it annually moves to the host country. In terms of third chapter, it specifically analyzed about the characteristics of the programs, conferences, workshops of Ars Electronica Festival and ISEA especially after 2010s. Community participation programs like 'Klangwolke', 'U19-Create Your World' lead Ars Electronica Festival to the public event. ISEA reflects the diverse domestic culture in accordance with the host country, and derives the high level of public participation and public relations through the cooperation with other domestic events. On the basis of these features, the fourth chapter analyzes the several media art events in Korea, and draws the four elements for benchmarking program and operation cases of Ars Electronica Festival and ISEA. First, it is necessary to focus on the component of program in which emphasizes on the social interaction of media art. The Nam June Paik Art Center could devise media art festival like 'Klangwolke', using the Nam June Paik's works that collaborate classic music with electronic sound. In addition to project for the youth festival under 19 years old such as 'U19-Create Your World', it leads to the various level of social participations based on the connection with educational institutions and academic staffs. Secondly, the formation of continuous network for media art is needed. ‘Mediacity Seoul’ can expand the discourse related to the topic in the way of composing the conference with other academic experts from the urban environment · social · education · game · science. Art Fab Lab of Korean National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art would be able to expand it through the collaborative projects associated with media artist, which enable to maintain art and cultural networks with media, automobile companies. Thirdly, popularizing the events through collaboration with the other cultural events is needed. It is the effective method of promotion that achieves synergy effects collaborating with public events or residence program. As if ‘Davinci Creative’ collaborate with industry cultural events of Seoul Digital Industrial Complex, it becomes an public festival reaches forward. As the last, the establishment of cultural city based on the sense of place is needed. The inducement of cultural and scientific meeting is needed beyond the previous conference room and the cultural places. It makes people easily access to the various remaining spaces where used as cultural event and it can be an effective way of advertisement. Ars Electronica Festival and International Symposium on Electronic Art provide a program which concerned about relation and role of media art and society to the public. Media art events aim to the creative support to the artists and also to expand an opportunity of cultural needs, social · economic activation of the local. Therefore, this thesis suggests that media art events in Korea should perform actively with a role that approach and engage with social issue.
