A B S T R A C T The Educational Implication of Mo-tzu’s Thought by Lee Kwang Un Major in Elementary English Education Graduate School of Education Seoul National University of Education Supervised by Professor : Kim, In The Confucianism is a representative philosophy of the East. The Confucianism’s ideas led the easter philosophy for thousands of years and numerous thinkers have developed and supplemented it. So even until now, that has a strong influence. In spite of confucianism had a high reputation, someone criticized confucianism fiercely. He is a Mo-tzu. Mo-tzu had pioneering and progressive ideas and logical and train systematically criticize about Confucianism. His arguing was powerful enough to threaten an era of prosperity of Confucianism. His basic ideas are ‘Gyeomae’(equivalent love, 兼愛) and ‘Gyosang-ri’(equivalent benefit, 交相利) that based on own unique concept. Gyeomae is the kind of love that loves mankind universally and equally. On the other hand, it is very similar with Confucius’s ‘ren’(benevolence, 仁). However, Mencius and other philosophers criticize Mohism because they thought Gyosang-ri means just private benefits. Mo-tzu did not think like that. Gyosang-ri means ultimate and public benefits and it pursues a comfortable life of the people. This idea is connected with Mo-tzu’s educational thought. He was interested with mathematics and natural science that he thought important educational contents. He proposed ‘Hien si’(賢士) and ‘Gyeo si’(兼士) as a desirable human model. These means a wise and practical scholar and Mo-tzu stressed aptitude of students and thought appropriate advice and analysis to learners is important. In particular, he emphasis on traditional education and must create a new thing at the same time scale. He thought education is the only one can change the world properly. His students followed Mo-tzu’s teachings actually in all their life. This means Mo-tzu’s thought is effective. The objective of this study is finding Mo-tzu’s excellent attainments and ideas educationally in detail. From this, I will find how his idea can help the matter of modern education and solutions about future world.
