서원은 유교 및 지역사회의 문화의식을 담고 있는 조선시대 건축물의 상징이다. 청도지역의 사림서원 또한 지역의 사회·문화적 양식을 이해하기에 충분한 의미를 지니고 있다. 본 연구는 ... 서원은 유교 및 지역사회의 문화의식을 담고 있는 조선시대 건축물의 상징이다. 청도지역의 사림서원 또한 지역의 사회·문화적 양식을 이해하기에 충분한 의미를 지니고 있다. 본 연구는 청도지역 이서면의 3개 서원에 대해 풍수적 관점으로 해석하여 그 시대 사람들의 지리관을 분석하였다. 분석 결과, 3개 서원의 입지적 특성은 완경사 평탄지에 배산을 두고 앞으로는 물을 향한 전형적인 배산임수 형태를 보였다. 또한 전체적으로 사신사가 갖추고 있는 곳에 입지함으로써, 외향적 경관과 더불어 안온한 장소감을 선호했던 것을 알 수 있었다. 좌향의 특징으로는 자계서원과 용강서원이 남동향임에 반해, 금호서원은 서향이었다. 금호서원의 배치가 일반적인 좌향인 남향으로 되어 있지 않은 것은 서쪽의 풍수적 길봉을 보기 위한 것으로 추정되며, 이는 곧 서원 창건자의 경관선호 의식이 반영된 결과로 보여진다. 조선시대 당시 학문과 문화, 행정의 복합적 기능을 수행했던 서원이 지금은 기능을 잃어버린 채 과거에 머물러 있는 공간이 되어버렸다. 서원의 우수한 풍수 입지적 특성과 유학교육의 산실이라는 장점을 살려 발전적 방향으로 나아가길 바라며, 본 연구가 이에 일조하기 기대한다.

This study examined how the Feng-Shui condition influenced the selection of locations and the arrangement of the buildings. For this purpose, three Seo-wons in Chung-do Lee-seo area have been selected. This study shows that the locational common fact of three Seo-wons are located at the mild slope plain with Bae-San-Lim-Su type(背山臨水形). they are also enclosed by the Sa-Sin-Sa(四神砂), give the users of the places the comfortable sense of place with the external landscape. The Ja-gye Seo-won and Yong-gang Seo-won face southeast, but Gyum-ho Seo-won face west. The aspect(坐向) of Gyum-ho Seo-won is not south, which is applied to usual Seo-won aspect. It is assumed that the Seo-won faces west to see a good hill from the viewpoint of Feng-shui. Seo-won played a vital role in the scholarship, culture and administration in the Joseon Dynasty.
