마일스 데이비스 퀸텟의 피아노 연주자이자, 레드 갈랜드 트리오의 리더로서 유명한 대표적인 모던 재즈 피아니스트인 레드 갈랜드의 독창적인 연주 기법에 대해 연구하였다. 먼저 현대 재... 마일스 데이비스 퀸텟의 피아노 연주자이자, 레드 갈랜드 트리오의 리더로서 유명한 대표적인 모던 재즈 피아니스트인 레드 갈랜드의 독창적인 연주 기법에 대해 연구하였다. 먼저 현대 재즈 피아노 영역에서 보편적으로 사용하는 연주 기법 중 하나인 블록 코드에 대해 간략하게 서술하고, 갈랜드만의 독창적인 블록 코드 연주 기법을 분석하였다. 연구의 효율성을 위해 마일스 데이비스 퀸텟의 멤버로 활동하던 8장의 앨범 중 블록 코드를 사용한 20곡과 레드 갈랜드 트리오로 활동했던 22장의 앨범 중 133곡을 대표적으로 선정하여 비교, 분석하였다. 그의 블록 코드의 특징을 사용 위치에 따라 4가지 연주 조합으로 나누고 보이싱과 그 리듬 구조를 연구하는 데 중점을 두었다. 연구를 통해 찾은 그의 주법을 분석하고, 그 결과를 바탕으로 그가 블록 코드를 사용하지 않으면서 그 사용 효과가 가장 잘 드러날 수 있는 ‘It Could Happen To You’, ‘In Your Own Sweet Way’, ‘I Could Write A Book’, ‘Will You Still Be Mine?’에 차례로 적용하여 연주하였다. 그리고 마지막으로 자작곡인 ‘서랍’에 그의 연주법을 종합적으로 적용시켜 연주하였다. 본 논문에서는 이러한 연주 기법을 실제 연주에서 어떻게 구체적으로 사용하고 응용할 수 있는지의 방법과 그 사용 효과로 인해 곡을 새롭게 표현할 수 있는 다양한 가능성을 결과물에 도출하였다. 키워드 : 레드 갈랜드, 블록 코드

This study conducted a research on the original playing techniques of typical modern jazz pianist Red Garland, the piano player of the renowned Miles Davis Quintet and the leader of Red Garland Trio. First, study briefly explains block chord which is a playing technique universally used in the area of modern jazz piano and analyzed Garland’s unique block chord playing techniques. For the efficiency of the research, this study selected and analyzed 20 pieces that used block chord among 8 albums of Miles Davis Quintet and 133 pieces among 22 albums of Red Garland Trio. Classifying the characteristics of his block chord into 4 playing combinations according to the location of its use, study focused on the research on voicing and its rhythm structure. Study analyzed his playing techniques discovered through research and applied them to the pieces and played them in the order of ‘It Could Happen To You’, ‘In Your Own Sweet Way’, ‘I Could Write A Book’ and ‘Will You Still Be Mine?’ in which he did not use block chord but the use of it can be best demonstrated, and, lastly, applied his playing techniques to the author’s own composed piece ‘Drawer’ in an integrated way. This study found out the methods how to practically use and apply these playing techniques in actual performances and drew out various possibilities to express musical pieces in new ways with the use of them in the results.
