This study aims to examine ‘History’ postulated by Frederic Jameson, and his interpretation of cultural texts through the semantic horizons, to understand the contemporary arts. The concept of ‘History’ is different from history and is an exclusive concept theorized by Jameson. ‘History’ refers to the historicity of the contemporary age, in which people living in the same period would never fully understand. However, Jameson attempts to represent totality of the contemporary age by making connections among the cultural texts through the mediation of History. Furthermore, to articulate the totality of the contemporary age, Jameson summarizes the cultural logic of the previous ages into realism and modernism in sequence and interprets postmodernism which is the cultural logic of the contemporary age. Jameson discovers the reification that has been concealed in the historical stream of the capitalism. Reification makes representations into fragments, leading people to forget about the historicity in the representations by disconnecting the historical dimension and passively follow the logic of reification. Jameson’s historical interpretation suggests to recover the totality in oblivion through reification and it provides us with the practical reasons to overcome the limitation implicated in the phenomenon. However, how can we overcome the structural limitation of the contemporary age and make accurate diagnosis of the present time? The study attempts to discover the possibilities through the interpretation of the artistic texts of current age based on Jameson’s notions of ‘History’ and historicity.
