This study aims to make local event programs and policy data to activate a village community through local event experiences by understanding the effect of residents’ local event experiences on their social connectedness, community attachment and the quality of life.
To accomplish this research goal, this study confirmed the concept of local event experiences through literature reviews, and examined the relations between social connectedness, community attachment and the quality of life. Besides, based on previous studies, particularly theoretical studies, this study established a research model and hypotheses and conducted an empirical analysis to verify the hypotheses.
As research subjects, this study selected residents at the age over 20 who participated in Dong-unit local events, ‘the Warm South of Yeon-nam Dong Village Market’, ‘Fun Market of Gal-hyen Dong’ and ‘Genae Village Festival of Sang-il Dong’.
Based on the empirical analysis results of hypotheses established, this study suggested local event programs and policy data to activate a village community through local event experiences as below.
Firstly, it was found that the sensation, sensibility and relation of residents’ local event experiences had positive (/) effect on their social connectedness, but the recognition and behavior did not have any significant effect.
It is important to develop local events into a range of Dong(洞)-unit village community, and it is also necessary to make local event programs stimulating residents’ sensation and sensibility provide administrative supports to build relations even in the stage of preparing local events, by discovering village community residents’ clubs or residents’ organizations.
Besides, to solve local problems, it is required to adopt a program contest in order to arrange local event programs as residents want, to guarantee autonomy in the process of arranging programs and to increase the importance of residents’ authority in establishing public-private governance. After a festival, it is needed to have residents evaluate and pay constant attention to local events.
Secondly, it was found that their social connectedness had positive (/) effect on their community attachment.
To increase residents’ senses of fellowship and social belonging, it is necessary to activate Dong-unit athletic meets and sports-for-all events. A Dong-unit athletic meet is held every other year because of local governments’ lack of budget, but it is required to encourage residents to voluntarily secure budget, while supporting even a small amount of budget.
Thirdly, it was found that their social connectedness had positive (/) effect on their quality of life.
Social connectedness is more valuable as a source of mental fertility as well as their ego-state, self-realization and self-respect.
The results imply that it is necessary to create local events with other opinions respected and reflected so that residents may play central roles in local events, by leading them to voluntarily participate, instead of governmental organization leading local events. Besides, during the process of creating and arranging local events, residents will have a higher degree of social connectedness with each other, through which they will have a sense of subjective happiness.
Fourthly, it was found that their community attachment had positive (/) effect on their quality of life.
It is needed to discover programs harmonious with the culture of a village community as well as historical traditional cultures and seasonal customs that a right identity can be found fit for the tourism resources and environments of each area. Moreover, to help residents keep close relations, it is needed to provide cultural and art spaces where residents can gather together all the time, rather than a community service center or a culture center, and actively support local events of small-sized residents’ gatherings.
While discovering and developing event experience programs fit for each area, this study proposed directions that communication and consideration between residents can increase their social connectedness and community attachment and have a stronger sense of happiness, further improving the quality of life.
As small gatherings of several residents leading local events are developed into a village community, and activated village communities gather together and become expanded into a city, further improving the national competitiveness at last, the results of this study imply the necessity of the central government and local governments’ interest and supports.
