As foreigners' immigration to South Korea has increased sharply, nurturing and education in multi cultural family in South Korea has become important social problem. Children from multi cultural family aged 7 to 12 account for a great part in South Korea. It is urgently necessary to give education that helps children from multi cultural family understand Korean culture better. As children tend to be curious and ego centric, they are likely to be ethnocentric. Therefore, it is necessary to create environment that helps children understand and respect different cultures, values and behaviors. A library serves as space through which people meet new world. It is advisable for us to encourage children from multi cultural family to use library so that they can get along with others. The purpose of this study is to improve awareness of cultural diversity and respect different culture, value and lifestyle by providing children from multi cultural family and children from non multi cultural family who are from third to sixth year in elementary school with education on cultural diversity. This study developed cultural diversity education program in public library and applied it to analyze a difference in awareness of cultural diversity education program, a difference in awareness of cultural diversity education program between experimental group and comparative group, library service, use of library service and influence of expansion of service. This study analyzed literature which is related to multi culture, awareness of multi culture, cultural diversity and cultural diversity education and cultural diversity service and programs that are provided in public library. Children who are third, fourth, fifth and sixth year in elementary school were surveyed to find out awareness of cultural diversity education program. Subjects of this study were composed of experimental group (16 children) who participated in cultural diversity education program and comparative group (30 children) who did not participate in cultural diversity education program. Children who are from third to sixth year in elementary school participated in cultural diversity education program for four months. The program was given over 11 sessions in a public library located in Chungcheongbukdo under the name of ‘world culture travel seeing from houses’. The program designed houses based on world culture by making good use of printed media and electronic media. Comparative group was composed of children who do not visit a library frequently and have little understanding of cultural diversity. A total of 62 questionnaires were sent and all of them were returned. A difference in awareness of cultural diversity education program was verified by using t-test. SPSS 18.0K was used to verify reliability of survey. Analysis of variance(Anova) and post hoc tests(Scheffe) were used to analyze a difference in awareness of books, audio books, multi fairy tales provided in a public library between groups (before, after, comparative). Findings of analyzing awareness of cultural diversity are as follows. First, operating education program for children who were in middle and upper grade of elementary school helped them improve their ability to understand and consider family members, neighbors and peers. Second, it was found that experimental group that participated in cultural diversity education program showed better awareness of cultural diversity, understanding, acceptance, consideration and respect of world culture than comparative group. Third, providing cultural diversity service helped children from multi cultural family use a library more frequently and information better and have more interest in reading. It was found that cultural diversity education program helped children understand, accept, consider and respect cultural diversity better. Suggestions for future research are as follows. First, it is advisable to expand cultural diversity related service provided in a library so that children from multi culture family can use a library better. Second, it is desirable to develop a guideline on cultural diversity education program related program so that people can use cultural diversity education program more effectively. Third, it is advisable to provide systematic reading environment by making good use of reading related cultural activities so that children can improve an ability to read and use information. Fourth, it is necessary to create a library which provides service that helps children understand and respect cultures of foreign countries and different lifestyles better and love the nature and humans and pursue peace through reading. Developing cultural diversity related program and supporting customized cultural diversity service will help increase cultural diversity education programs and expand cultural diversity service in a public library and provide children with opportunities to use a library better and improve awareness of cultural diversity.
